BALLARAT Cricket Umpires Association members are looking for new recruits to join their organisation.<\/p>\n
Anyone who is 15 years or older is invited to apply to become a cricket umpire and no previous experience is required.<\/p>\n
All training is provided, and umpires can earn up to $150 a day.<\/p>\n
“The commitment is to learn and understand the laws of cricket,” said association secretary, Ian Morris.<\/p>\n
“They don’t have to know the laws of cricket now, we will train them.”<\/p>\n
Skills umpires develop include communication, mental fitness, and managing people.<\/p>\n
Mr Morris said the best benefit of being an umpire if getting to watch the game up close.<\/p>\n
“We call it the best seat in the house because you’re right involved in the game,” he said.<\/p>\n
“You get good comradery with the other umpires and certainly with the other players.<\/p>\n
“It’s an enjoyable day and you get paid for it.”<\/p>\n
Games occur on Saturday afternoons and there are other opportunities to umpire mid-week.<\/p>\n
Children aged 13 and over can also apply to become junior umpires who work on a Friday night.<\/p>\n
