{"id":104759,"date":"2024-07-26T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-07-25T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/?p=104759"},"modified":"2024-07-24T16:55:44","modified_gmt":"2024-07-24T06:55:44","slug":"cheer-our-athletes-on-as-they-go-for-gold","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/sport\/cheer-our-athletes-on-as-they-go-for-gold\/","title":{"rendered":"Cheer our athletes on as they go for gold!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>WITH the Paris Olympics set to begin early tomorrow morning, two Ballarat locals will be part of the more-than four hundred selected to represent Australia.<\/p>\n<p>The &#8216;king of Ballarat,&#8217; Yual Reath, will be competing in the men\u2019s high jump, and former Ballarat Sportsperson of the Year, Kathryn Mitchell will be taking to the field in the javelin competition.<\/p>\n<p>This is Mitchell\u2019s forth Olympic games after first picking up a javelin at 17 years old.<\/p>\n<p>Originally from Casterton, she was inspired to begin athletics to follow the footsteps of her younger sister, and initially was a long and triple jumper.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/07\/20230823001833916188_46817.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"396\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kathryn Mitchell will be taking to the field in the javelin competition for her forth Olympic Games. Photo: KAI PFAFFENBACH\/REUTERS<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Mitchell joined the Eureka Athletics Club in Ballarat and competed in the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games and made her Olympic debut in 2012 in London<\/p>\n<p>She made it to the final eight in Rio in 2016 and went on to compete in Tokyo in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Mitchell is currently ranked 15th in the world for women\u2019s Javelin throw.<\/p>\n<p>For 24-year-old Reath, Paris will be his first Olympics after recently stopping his day job as a landscape gardener to focus on high jumping.<\/p>\n<p>Originally from South Sudan, Reath and his family lived in Egypt for 18 months before they travelled to Australia when he was six or seven years old.<\/p>\n<p>Reath began taking high jump seriously in his teens.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/07\/20230823001833924498_43807.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"401\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Eureka Athletics Club will surely lead the home support for Kathryn Mitchell. Photo: TIBOR ILLYES\/EPA<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He is ranked number one in Australia and number 10 in the world, with a personal best of 2.30 metres that he reached on the Gold Coast in April.<\/p>\n<p>The women\u2019s javelin throw competition will begin at 6.25pm on Wednesday 7 August and the final will be at 3.40am on Sunday 11 August.<\/p>\n<p>Men\u2019s high jump qualification will begin at 6.05pm on Wednesday 7 August before the final at 3.10am on Sunday 11 August.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>WITH the Paris Olympics set to begin early tomorrow morning, two Ballarat locals will be part of the more-than four hundred selected to represent Australia.
