NEXT Saturday will mark the tenth iteration of a global movement aimed at celebrating community-led live music, with the initiative to be acknowledged at Buninyong.<\/p>\n

Marshmallow Jam Cafe at 409 Warrenheip Street will soon serve as the epicentre of the town’s involvement in Play Music on the Porch Day.<\/p>\n

Organised through Buninyong Community Events, the free concert is so far slated to see more than 10 acts coming together to celebrate the joy of live performance.<\/p>\n

“I don’t think a big event like this has ever been held for this day in Buninyong,” said Buninyong Community Events president Lisa Cressey.<\/p>\n

“People may have been playing on their own porch but nothing like this has been organised that I know of.<\/p>\n

“I’d been playing in Melbourne before as part of Melbourne Ukulele Kollective for this and we thought we’d bring it to Buninyong.<\/p>\n

“With the cafe, there’s already a group of people that rock up every Wednesday to play music, and there’s a tent outside as well so it’s an ideal location.”<\/p>\n

Performers include the U3A Ukulele Band, Three Banjos, Celtic group Duck ‘n’ Weave, Blues Fusion, as well as Cressey’s ukulele punk band The P-Ukes.<\/p>\n

Cressey hopes to see the local participation develop beyond Marshmallow Jam Cafe’s awning.<\/p>\n

“The cafe’s really onboard and everybody I’ve spoken to is very excited,” she said.<\/p>\n

“Somebody said we should do this on every porch in Buninyong and I’m like, let me do this one to start and we can see about next year.<\/p>\n

“I’m thinking if we get too many acts maybe we can put them at Buninyong Community House or have a few more performers around the space.<\/p>\n

“Next year, it could be even bigger.”<\/p>\n

Play Music on the Porch Day organisers estimated performers across more than 70 countries take part each year. The concert will take place from 11am on Saturday 31 August.<\/p>\n
