WORKS to create a roundabout at Ripon Street south and Urquhart Street are now complete.<\/p>\n
The project which has also seen the installation of traffic islands, cycling and pedestrian paths, new signs, kerb and channelling, line-marking and drainage began in June with an aim to boost safety for pedestrians, drivers, and bike riders, following accidents on site.<\/p>\n
The Federal Government contributed $464,000 from the 2023-24 Black Spot Program and the City of Ballarat chipped in $276,000.<\/p>\n
“This new roundabout will create a safer environment for people accessing Food is Free or going to band rehearsals or sports practice at the Western Oval,” said Member for Ballarat Catherine King.<\/p>\n
“We want to make sure that drivers, pedestrians and cyclists living in, or passing through Ballarat can get where they need to go quickly and safely.<\/p>\n
“The Australian Government is partnering with City of Ballarat to improve road safety because every injury and every death on our roads is a tragedy.<\/p>\n
“Road safety is a shared responsibility and something we all need to work together to improve.”<\/p>\n
Ballarat City Brass Band life member Chris Ducardus said he had witnessed crashes at the intersection, which is next to where the band rehearses.<\/p>\n
“We built the band hall in 1972 and I’ve seen numerous accidents,” he said.<\/p>\n
“Now the ECKA kinder has joined our band hall, the upgrade is even more important for the safety of the children.”<\/p>\n
City of Ballarat mayor Cr Des Hudson said works on the intersection will help keep the community safe.<\/p>\n
