BALLARAT residents are encouraged to get on their bikes next month as part of Biketober.<\/p>\n

This is the second year of the initiative, which saw 177 people join the challenge in 2023, reducing carbon emissions by 1073 kilograms.<\/p>\n

Biketober takes place across Victoria, and participants who encourage others to join them in the active program have a chance to win prizes.<\/p>\n

The initiative, which is run by Love to Ride and facilitated by local governments, is suitable for everyone.<\/p>\n

“We aim to create positive change through our cycling programs and to promote healthier, happier people, places and businesses,” said Love to Ride regional manager, Christina Sorbello.<\/p>\n

More than 40 per cent of occasional riders who took part in the challenge last year rode regularly in the six months after Biketober.<\/p>\n

“Active transport is a great way to get around our city, why not try one of our safe separated shared paths to move between home and work, or simply to get out and be active?” said City of Ballarat mayor Cr Des Hudson.<\/p>\n

This year, Central Highlands Water will be supporting the initiative and managing director Jeff Haydon said cyclists can stop at a Choose Tap water fountain during their travels.<\/p>\n

“We care for a range of reservoir parks across the Central Highlands region that people can ride to, or through, and offer over 100 Choose Tap drinking water fountains where cyclists can stop along the way,” he said.<\/p>\n

“We’re excited to champion Biketober and encourage locals to get cycling for long term health and wellbeing.”<\/p>\n
