A CELEBRATORY musical about life and love at an all-girls school is heading to Helen Macpherson Smith Theatre next week.<\/p>\n

Crush: The Musical will be performed by Federation University’s graduating performing arts company.<\/p>\n

The story follows students at the Dame Dorothea Dosserdale School for Girls during the 1960s, a school known for supporting young women to be themselves.<\/p>\n

However, the new headmistress is a tyrant with strict Victorian values.<\/p>\n

“The girls are encouraged to be who they want to be and live their lives in any direction they want to take it but now all their dreams and hopes are crushed because an evil head mistress has arrived,” said Lily Infantino, who plays Daimler Jones.<\/p>\n

“She wants to enforce the idea of women being the matriarch and being whatever the husband wants.”<\/p>\n

The cast is largely made up of women and non-binary people, and Infantino said it is empowering to perform a musical which celebrates homosexuality.<\/p>\n

“I think it’s very interesting to see a story that’s set within the 60s when homosexuality wasn’t allowed really or a common thing that people were admitting,” she said.<\/p>\n

“I think it’s really nice to see a story set during that period that does quite the opposite and is very empowering and celebratory of women being in love.”<\/p>\n

Infantino said the musical will be fun and entertaining for audiences.<\/p>\n

“This show is a great show to see if you’re feeling a little bit down in the dumps and you want something more positive,” she said.<\/p>\n

“It’s colourful and it’s bright and I think audiences will absolutely love every second of it.”<\/p>\n
