{"id":106663,"date":"2024-10-04T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-10-03T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/?p=106663"},"modified":"2024-10-02T20:27:07","modified_gmt":"2024-10-02T10:27:07","slug":"giving-for-healthy-koala-habitats","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/news\/giving-for-healthy-koala-habitats\/","title":{"rendered":"Giving for healthy koala habitats"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>ENVIRONMENTAL company 15 Trees has received a donation of two thousand gum trees and guards to enhance biodiversity and support koala habitats.<\/p>\n<p>The donation was made by Ballarat Wildlife Park as part of its Branching out for Koalas campaign and marks the beginning of an ongoing partnership.<\/p>\n<p>From each koala encounter at the park, $10 is donated to the campaign which was created to combat threats to koalas such as habitat loss, bushfires, and climate change.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s an amazing boost, especially this time of year when tree planting is starting to slow down,&#8221; said founder of 15 Trees, Colleen Filippa.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/10\/Colleen2_45349.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Two thousand gum trees will be planted across four sites in Victoria.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The koalas are under siege, I suppose, and up in New South Wales and Queensland in particular they are almost on the endangered list.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The trees will be planted across Victoria at locations such as Mount Mercer, Napoleons, the Brisbane Ranges and the Mornington Peninsula, to rejuvenate wildlife corridors.<\/p>\n<p>The initiative will also have broader benefits such as carbon sequestration, soil regeneration, and the creation of environments for other native wildlife species.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re spreading the love, and the trees are going out to four different sites,&#8221; said Ms Filippa.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/10\/LolaandLucia_46104.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"678\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The project aims to combat koala habitat loss.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Ongoing, we could look at the coast of New South Wales and in Queensland as well.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You can&#8217;t get enough trees planted basically with urban expansion and loosing habitat.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>15 trees has recently reached 15 years of operation with nearly 450,000 trees planted across Australia.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Every bit adds up.
