{"id":107688,"date":"2024-11-07T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-11-06T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/?p=107688"},"modified":"2024-11-06T15:31:40","modified_gmt":"2024-11-06T04:31:40","slug":"awards-ceremony-a-celebration-of-seniors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/news\/awards-ceremony-a-celebration-of-seniors\/","title":{"rendered":"Awards ceremony a celebration of seniors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>MARION Blythman has been named Ballarat&#8217;s Senior of the Year for her work as a regional convenor for the Community Visitors Program and as a volunteer at the Ballaarat Mechanics&#8217; Institute.<\/p>\n<p>The announcement was made at an awards ceremony last Friday as a conclusion to the Ballarat Seniors Festival held throughout October.<\/p>\n<p>The event celebrated inspirational people aged 60 and over who have made significant contributions to the city.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Blythman has volunteered at the BMI for 20 years, helping to preserve artefacts and support library collections.<\/p>\n<p>In her role as regional convenor in the Community Visitors Program for the Office of the Public Advocate, Ms Blythman leads a volunteer team of 10 who visit 57 homes throughout Ballarat, advocating for people with a disability.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Blythman said the role is about discovering what people with a disability can do, rather than what they can&#8217;t.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I am still sort of looking for those opportunities and I see now some of the staff in the houses are finding those special places for those people,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s all these special little moments that just sort of keep me going when I think I should have stopped.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 601px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/11\/Marion2_11543.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"601\" height=\"424\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Marion Blythman (centre) is a regional convenor for the Community Visitors Program and a volunteer at the Ballaarat Mechanics&#8217; Institute.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Keith Moore won the Community Service Award, the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Award went to Maria John and Jack Yang took out the Healthy and Active Living Award.<\/p>\n<p>The Community Teamwork Award was won by and Anglicare Community Breakfast team, and John O&#8217;Brien and Ian Drew were awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Blythman said it is important to recognise the contributions of seniors to the Ballarat community.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It broadens the outlook of what seniors are doing,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MARION Blythman has been named Ballarat&#8217;s Senior of the Year for her work as a regional convenor for the Community Visitors Program and as a volunteer at the Ballaarat Mechanics&#8217; Institute.
