THE City of Ballarat and Moorabool Shire are reminding motorists to be on the lookout for wildlife as koala breeding season reaches its peak.<\/p>\n

Breeding season is between September and February, and koalas are more active particularly between dusk and dawn to seek shelter, food or a new mate.<\/p>\n

The often spend more time on the ground where they are vulnerable and are known to live in the Canadian Corridor from Warrenheip to Buninyong.<\/p>\n

Woowookarung Regional Park and Union Jack Reserve are key habitats.<\/p>\n

The City of Ballarat and Moorabool Shire Council are investigating adding roadside signage to the to highlight koala movement in Ballarat’s east.<\/p>\n

“We thank local community members for raising concerns about koala protection,” said City director of infrastructure and environment Bridget Wetherall.<\/p>\n

“We are committed to working with the community to improve koala safety in important habitat corridors by highlighting the risk of vehicle strikes.<\/p>\n

“This new signage would be designed to raise awareness of the seasonally increased risks for motorists during the breeding season as koalas search for a mate.”<\/p>\n
