{"id":108819,"date":"2024-12-20T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-12-19T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/?p=108819"},"modified":"2024-12-18T13:18:20","modified_gmt":"2024-12-18T02:18:20","slug":"show-is-over-forlive-music-venue","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/living\/show-is-over-forlive-music-venue\/","title":{"rendered":"Show is over forlive music venue"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>ONE of the region&#8217;s premier live music venues has closed its doors.<\/p>\n<p>After about 2500 gigs and countless fond memories for many, management behind The Eastern closed the business earlier this month.<\/p>\n<p>Licensee Matt Stone said that after seven years and the increasing pressures of running the business, it is time for a change.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_108820\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-108820\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-108820\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/12\/IMG_4462_77785.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"412\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-108820\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Matt Stone took over the management of the venue after decades of enjoying the region&#8217;s live music scene.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve done it long enough and it&#8217;s time to get out,&#8221; he said. &#8220;We offered it up for sale all year and no one bought it, so we&#8217;ve just got to move on.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A wellspring of support and appreciation came from musicians and punters alike following the announcement on 10 December via the business&#8217;s Facebook page.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The response has been huge,&#8221; Mr Stone said. &#8220;Feels a bit like we&#8217;re letting everyone down but we&#8217;ve got to move on and maybe somebody else will set something up.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_108827\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-108827\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-108827\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/12\/IMG_4504_77855-1-rotated.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"986\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-108827\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Last drinks: The Eastern owner Matt Stone has closed the business after nearly seven years in operation. Photos: TIM BOTTAMS<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Mr Stone took over management of the venue in 2018 alongside his partner Chrissie after decades enjoying the region&#8217;s live music scene.<\/p>\n<p>He said the space was &#8220;a lot emptier&#8221; when he started running it.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout Mr Stone&#8217;s time operating The Eastern, the venue was upgraded bit by bit with an updated kitchen, expanded menu, a new bar, and an overhauled beer system.<\/p>\n<p>Countless band stickers were also added throughout the building.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/12\/IMG_4535_77871.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"453\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Matt Stone doubts The Eastern will be revived as a live music space.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Alongside pointing to personal highlights including Tropical F*ck Storm and New York-based jazz band Mystery Lights, Mr Stone said he has enjoyed seeing how The Eastern has supported local bands.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s been everything for the local live scene,&#8221; he said. &#8220;There&#8217;s going to be a pretty big hole from us leaving.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was great to watch the local young bands getting bigger and better, and grow. We&#8217;ve had great metal nights and a lot of international bands come over. &#8220;A lot of the local stuff were the best nights, when the town filled the place up.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Pre-COVID, gigs were held at The Eastern five days a week, after which the rate of shows dropped to three a week.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Things definitely changed after that. There just wasn&#8217;t as many artists or punters. Everything was a bit different,&#8221; Mr Stone said.<\/p>\n<p>Recordings of past shows will be donated to local Ballarat audiovisual archivist Rex Hardware.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Stone said he doubts the venue will reopen as a live music space.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ONE of the region&#8217;s premier live music venues has closed its doors.
