{"id":108931,"date":"2024-12-22T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-12-21T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/?p=108931"},"modified":"2024-12-18T00:04:13","modified_gmt":"2024-12-17T13:04:13","slug":"go-dutch-by-the-lake","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/news\/go-dutch-by-the-lake\/","title":{"rendered":"Go Dutch by the lake"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A GATHERING of Ballarat&#8217;s Dutch or Dutch-related community will be held at the Lake View Hotel on Sunday 29 December.<\/p>\n<p>Going Dutch will run from noon to 3pm, and organiser Yvon Davis said there will be Dutch music playing and Heineken beer flowing, and orange clothes are encouraged.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;According to the 2021 census, almost 900 people living in Ballarat were born in the Netherlands,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But over 4000 have one or both parents born in the Netherlands.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Dutch settled early in Ballarat due to the gold rush, with the best-known Dutchman at the time Jan Vennik, who was a gold miner, arrested for treason at the Eureka Stockade, later released and pardoned.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;After World War Two, many Dutch migrated to start a new life in countries such as Canada, New Zealand and Australia, with quite a considerable number settling in Ballarat and surrounds \u2013 many at the time being assisted by Father Leo Mars.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Since then, the number of Dutch migrating has slowed since the large migration numbers in the &#8217;50s and &#8217;60s, however there are still Dutch settling in Ballarat, due to the space, even the weather and sometimes due to falling in love with an Australian partner.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/12\/DSC_6245_98173.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"447\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The number of Dutch people migrating to Ballarat has slowed since the large migration numbers in the &#8217;50s and &#8217;60s, however there are still some settling here due to the space, weather and people.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Ms Davis said the Dutch related in Ballarat and surrounds Facebook page held a coffee morning a few years ago with many Dutch people in attendance.<\/p>\n<p>She said it is hoped many Dutch, or Dutch-related people, will get together again this time.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The idea is to organise more regular get-togethers,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>Bookings are free but essential.
