There&#8217;s a lot of ableism and lack of acceptance for disabled people who are often minimised.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We thought it was important to let people know even if it&#8217;s not at the forefront of their mind that we&#8217;re disabled artists, we own that, and to let people know disabled artists exist, are capable, and that it doesn&#8217;t limit us.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Living with PTSD and mobility issues, Segaert began drawing and watercolour painting in 2021 after attending classes at the Ballarat East Neighbourhood House, where she now teaches watercolour herself.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/01\/20241229_140817_26707.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"539\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Quartz Vein, Colourful Sea, and Whsipers in the Gale by Christine Segaert.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Segaert preceded Permission Granted with an exhibition at The Mercure late last year, Spectrum of Artistry, which included 17 creatives, including Taylor, one of her students.<\/p>\n<p>It also served as the debut of her recently-created inclusive group, Ballarat Art Collective, supported with a City of Ballarat grant.<\/p>\n<p>Segaert said the artistic freedom within Permission Granted extends to its subject matter.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/01\/20241231_140610_26780.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"1283\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Trio of fruit by Andrina Taylor.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Andrina&#8217;s painted a lot of seascapes and landscapes in oil and acrylic,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve got a couple botanical works and whimsical pieces as part of my Nostalgia series like a chocolate freckle and an Iced VoVo which invoke memories of my childhood.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We don&#8217;t use brushes when we use oils and acrylic; we use our fingers, because it&#8217;s such an organic process and it actually reminds me of fingerpainting.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/01\/20241231_140458_26724.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"758\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Stormy Beach by Andrina Taylor.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>More than 10 per cent of the pieces in Permission Granted were sold on opening night.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;For myself and Andrina, this is definitely the biggest exhibition we&#8217;ve done to date,&#8221; Segaert said.<\/p>\n<p>Permission Granted is on show until January 30.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A joint exhibition between two disabled female creatives now on display at Mercure Ballarat is serving a dual purpose.
