{"id":109445,"date":"2025-01-17T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-01-16T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/?p=109445"},"modified":"2025-01-17T17:02:16","modified_gmt":"2025-01-17T06:02:16","slug":"national-underwater-hockey-makes-a-splash-at-balc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/sport\/national-underwater-hockey-makes-a-splash-at-balc\/","title":{"rendered":"National underwater hockey makes a splash at BALC"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THIS week, Ballarat has been the host city of the 2025 Australian Underwater Hockey Nationals Championships which will conclude on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>Youth, elite and masters teams from across the country have been competing in the 50-metre pool at the Ballarat Aquatic and Lifestyle Centre at Prince of Wales Park since last weekend.<\/p>\n<p>The under-15 and under-19 athletes were in the pool from Monday to Thursday. The seniors&#8217; tournament began on Wednesday and will conclude on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>Media liaison Jacqui Walsh said Victoria&#8217;s young players have been proud to host opposition sides from other states.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/01\/IMG_8258_52893.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"486\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">More-than 300 athletes have been part of the tournament.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They&#8217;ve been playing really well, the tournament&#8217;s been great, and everyone&#8217;s been really excited to be here,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Over 300 athletes are here throughout the week, and there are about 54 Victorian players.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We chose this pool because there are criteria to meet.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The pool has to be big enough and deep enough, and the floor needs to be flat and conducive to sliding a puck along it.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The operators of the pool have been really accommodating.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/01\/IMG_8238_54962.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"463\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Home state team: Victoria&#8217;s under-15 and under-19 players.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Members of the Wonthaggi and Geelong underwater hockey clubs have made up the organising committee of the nationals.<\/p>\n<p>An opening ceremony was held on Sunday, including a Wadawurrung Welcome to Country.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Walsh said the sport is a unique and breathtaking one to watch, growing in popularity internationally, particularly among juniors.<\/p>\n<p>Major underwater hockey events have been taking place across Australia since the 1980s.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>THIS week, Ballarat has been the host city of the 2025 Australian Underwater Hockey Nationals Championships which will conclude on Sunday.
