THE Ballarat Aquatic and Lifestyle Centre is introducing a new program to teach children survival skills in open water.<\/p>\n

The Inland Water Safety Program is open to children aged six to 14 and aims to increase their awareness of risks in unpredictable water environments.<\/p>\n

Since 1 December last year, 50 people have drowned in Australia \u2013 three more than the five-year average for this time of year.<\/p>\n

Ballarat mayor Tracey Hargreaves said the program addresses an important community need.<\/p>\n

“By teaching children how to respond to the challenges of unpredictable inland water, we can reduce the risk of drowning and foster confidence and awareness,” she said.<\/p>\n

“Water safety is a life skill that every child should have access to.<\/p>\n

“We’re thrilled to offer this program to the community and make a meaningful contribution to preventing future tragedies.”<\/p>\n

The program runs for three days, beginning on Monday 20 January.<\/p>\n

The first session will be held at the Ballarat Aquatic and Lifestyle Centre and the next two at Lake Wendouree.<\/p>\n

Participation cost is $75, which includes a one-hour session each day and a rash vest that can be kept.<\/p>\n
