{"id":109575,"date":"2025-01-25T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-01-24T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/?p=109575"},"modified":"2025-01-22T21:09:05","modified_gmt":"2025-01-22T10:09:05","slug":"dragons-to-ring-in20th-anniversary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/news\/dragons-to-ring-in20th-anniversary\/","title":{"rendered":"Dragons to ring in20th anniversary"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE local offshoot of a decades-old initiative offering an on-water social and physical outlet to breast cancer survivors is celebrating twenty years next month.<\/p>\n<p>Members past and present of Dragons Abreast Ballarat will meet at the Boatshed Restaurant overlooking Lake Wendouree to ring in the milestone.<\/p>\n<p>Treasurer Wendy Jacobs said the event will be a casual afternoon of camaraderie.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s to celebrate the fact we&#8217;re still here after 20 years and still enjoying our paddling,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;ll be an afternoon tea to get together with our current and former members and hopefully some of our paddling members from across the state.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/01\/IMG_1448_19287.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"431\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The local club meets each week for a paddle and chat.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Initially established in 2005 through Gabrielle Boermann, the group is part of a nationwide movement established in Canada three decades ago.<\/p>\n<p>The local club currently has about 30 members, who meet on Saturdays, as well as Tuesday evenings during daylight savings, at Lake Wendouree for a paddle and chat.<\/p>\n<p>Members participate in about three to four regattas each year, both interstate and overseas.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Jacobs joined the local club 15 years ago after coming across the club while undertaking treatment for breast cancer.<\/p>\n<p>Having gotten involved during the Australia-wide drought, when Lake Wendouree was bone dry, Ms Jacobs still remembers travelling with the group to Bendigo, Geelong, and Melbourne to undertake their boating.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/01\/Florence_19293.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"527\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Social water sport: Dragons Abreast Ballarat members have previously travelled to places like the Arno River in Florence to participate in regattas. Photos: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s great to get together, have some exercise, fellowship and friendship,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s not a support group, but it is a supportive group. Most of the people in the boat know where you come from.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Going through breast cancer is incredibly intense, emotionally, and physically. But, when it ends, you almost become adrift and you look around for what else you can do.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The group&#8217;s a celebration of life, and that there is life and fun after breast cancer.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The 20th anniversary event will take place from 3pm on 8 February.
