BALLARAT road cycling collective The Saxons are one of many groups preparing for another Cycle Classic this weekend, raising money for the Fiona Elsey Cancer Research Institute (FECRI).<\/p>\n

The group of retired doctors, geologists, teachers, accountants, bank managers and everyday riders prefer to be known as an autonomous collective rather than a formal cycling club but share a passion for cycling for a cause.<\/p>\n

Group member Jamie Govan said most members have been touched by cancer, so it is important to support FECRI.<\/p>\n

“Most of us have been touched by cancer somewhere along the line,” he said.<\/p>\n

“We’re doing it for the reason of trying to find a cure for cancer.<\/p>\n

“I think [FECRI] are going to uncover the secret to cure cancer here.”<\/p>\n

Since the McCallum Trophy for most kilometres ridden was introduced, the Saxons have won it every year.<\/p>\n

Last year they had a team of 49 riders and this year they’re hoping for 50.<\/p>\n

Previous Saxon members are travelling from Queensland and NSW to take part in the event and catch up with old friends.<\/p>\n

“It gives us something to do, it gives us a purpose in life, and it keeps us fit,” Mr Govan said.<\/p>\n

“When we have things like the ability to raise money for cancer \u2026 it just adds an extra dimension to what we’re doing and what we’re about.”<\/p>\n
