THE car park site behind The Unicorn Hotel will soon come alive with creativity and vibrancy.<\/p>\n
A market next weekend will see the space dotted with local makers, artisans and creatives.<\/p>\n
The Unicorn Carpark Takeover is the brainchild of Sara Kittelty of cake business Kittelty’s and Tara Poole of Ballarat Evolve, which pairs creative endeavours with vacant venues.<\/p>\n
Kittelty said the event is in keeping with the Ballarat Evolve ethos of bringing purpose to empty space.<\/p>\n
“It’s about activating a space that’s hidden and is quite beautiful,” she said.<\/p>\n
“We’ve got some beautiful, historic buildings and remnant architecture.<\/p>\n
“We’re aiming for around 10 stalls including a shopfront from Ballarat Clay Collective, and some of the food stuff will be from Luigi’s Gelato, Lucky and James, and Mrs Browne Bakes.”<\/p>\n
Kittelty will sell her cakes and other baked goods from her kitchen space at the hotel’s rear, while the Unicorn Hotel’s primary licensee, gallery space Unicorn Collection, will also be open on the day.<\/p>\n
A Ballarat Evolve initiative, the space currently showcases works from a dozen artists and makers from Ballarat and other parts of regional Victoria, some of whom will be present during the market.<\/p>\n
Curator Angela D’Alton said while Unicorn Collection is not directly involved with the market, the event is an opportunity for attendees to see how the space is being used. “People will be able to see the collection, all of which is for sale,” she said.<\/p>\n
“They can come through and enjoy the space, which is an historic building.<\/p>\n
“We’ve been here since around November last year and it’s to showcase artists from Ballarat and places like Mornington Peninsula and Horsham. We’re expecting six more artists in the next couple weeks.”<\/p>\n
Live music will be provided by car park DJ Gary Morris. The Unicorn Carpark Takeover will be held on Saturday 15 March from 9am to 2pm down Unicorn Lane.<\/p>\n
Kittelty said there is flexibility to introduce the event to other unused spaces around Ballarat in the future.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
