{"id":111451,"date":"2025-04-04T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-04-03T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/?p=111451"},"modified":"2025-04-02T18:53:47","modified_gmt":"2025-04-02T07:53:47","slug":"ballarat-to-barossa-drive-boosts-fecri","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/news\/ballarat-to-barossa-drive-boosts-fecri\/","title":{"rendered":"Ballarat to Barossa drive boosts FECRI"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>FOURTEEN volunteers in six colourful cars travelled from Ballarat to the Barossa last weekend in support of the Fiona Elsey Cancer Research Institute.<\/p>\n<p>Drive to Survive, an initiative of FECRI deputy chair and dealer principal of Morrow Motors, Gavin Morrow, is a three-day road trip which combines creativity and fundraising.<\/p>\n<p>All money raised from the trip supports FECRI, Australia&#8217;s only regional cancer research institute, and the group set a target to raise $25,000.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/04\/FECRI2_48361.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"547\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Participants drove from Ballarat to the Barossa, via Mildura.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Mr Morrow&#8217;s late father was treated by FECRI honorary director Professor George Kannourakis, and over 10 years Mr Morrow has raised nearly $120,000 for the organisation.<\/p>\n<p>This was the first Drive to Survive initiative and Mr Morrow said he hopes to make it an annual event.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We started just over 10 years ago, and George was treating my father,&#8221; Mr Morrow said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When he passed away, we felt as a family that we really liked what George was doing with his research and as a family we wanted to contribute to it.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is the first time we&#8217;ve done this, and we are hoping we can make it an annual event and grow it bigger and bigger.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/04\/FECRI4_49662.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"961\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Steve and Zoe Krahn.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The trip began last Friday with a tour of FECRI&#8217;s Ballarat lab before the convoy covered 450 kilometres through Birchip to Mildura.<\/p>\n<p>On Saturday, the six cars drove through Wentworth and Renmark to South Australia&#8217;s Barossa Valley before a trip to Birdwood Motor Museum and scenic towns like Hahndorf and Mount Barker on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>Each day had a different theme including crazy hats and disguises, and participants took part in a photo scavenger hunt while on the journey.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>FOURTEEN volunteers in six colourful cars travelled from Ballarat to the Barossa last weekend in support of the Fiona Elsey Cancer Research Institute.
