{"id":112649,"date":"2025-05-15T16:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-05-15T06:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/?p=112649"},"modified":"2025-05-15T16:00:58","modified_gmt":"2025-05-15T06:00:58","slug":"trout-released-as-gift-to-city","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/news\/trout-released-as-gift-to-city\/","title":{"rendered":"Trout released as gift to city"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>VOLUNTEERS from Ballarat Fish Hatchery released 6000 Brown Trout into Lake Wendouree this morning.<\/p>\n<p>The group were assisted by the Fly Fishing Club with boats to distribute the fingerling trout around the lake as an annual gift to Ballarat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s part of our ongoing commitment to supply fish for all the fisher folk of Ballarat,\u201d volunteer Robert Darby said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn Lake Wendouree we do donate 6000 fish every year and that\u2019s been an ongoing thing for many years so we keep this well stocked.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 602px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/05\/front3_40268.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"602\" height=\"802\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fly Fishing Club president Shane Stevens.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Ballarat Fish Hatchery has been located behind the Botanical Gardens since 1885.<\/p>\n<p>The group breed around 60,000 Rainbow and Brown Trout each year to be stocked in dams or supplied to Victorian Fisheries.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe breed those fish from eggs, we capture the trout, we strip them a fertilise the egg and we grow the fish,\u201d Mr Darby said.<\/p>\n<p>The Hatchery is managed by a group of volunteers from the Ballarat Fish Acclimatisation Society and Mr Darby said the group\u2019s work is crucial to Victoria\u2019s fishing stock.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s 100 per cent run by volunteers so the importance is to maintain the fishing stock for Victoria for years to come,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur work is crucial to maintaining the fish health and providing that product.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/05\/hatchery1_41259.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The volunteers released 6000 Brown Trout into lake Wendouree.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>VOLUNTEERS from Ballarat Fish Hatchery released 6000 Brown Trout into Lake Wendouree this morning.
