{"id":112708,"date":"2025-05-23T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-05-22T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/?p=112708"},"modified":"2025-05-21T20:17:09","modified_gmt":"2025-05-21T10:17:09","slug":"lions-make-statement-in-win-over-roosters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/sport\/lions-make-statement-in-win-over-roosters\/","title":{"rendered":"Lions make statement in win over Roosters"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>REDAN\u2019S BFNL A-grade netball drought against North Ballarat is finally over, after the Lions stunned the powerhouse Roosters at City Oval last Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>The Lions overtook the Roosters in fourth spot with an ultra-impressive 56-40 victory on their home court.<\/p>\n<p>It was the Lions&#8217; first A-grade win against the Roosters in 10 years and was led by standout efforts from defenders Erin Riley and Ashlee Smith and goal shooter Eva Manserra (32 goals).<\/p>\n<p>The foundations for the Lions\u2019 statement making win were laid in a breathtaking 18-11 second quarter that helped them turn a two-goal quarter-time deficit into a five-goal half-time lead.<\/p>\n<p>Carrying their momentum into the second half, the Lions outscored the Roosters 28-17 to seal a watershed win.<\/p>\n<p>Playing coach Smith admitted being pleasantly surprised by the 16-goal margin.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNorth have a very strong attack set-up and are always a tough battle,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur young ones in attack (Manserra and Tahlia Thompson) definitely stepped up, which I was very happy with, but it was very much a whole team effort.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We came in wanting to win and really showed that.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/05\/DSC_0543_48236.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"446\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tahlia Thompson and Eva Manserra combined brilliantly in the goal circle for Redan.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have very strong connections and we definitely have a chemistry among us this year. There is a friendship level, but I feel that plays into our game.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Smith said she was thrilled with her side\u2019s early season progress and four wins.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are tracking very well at this point of the season,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have a tough game against Darley (this) week.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I am being honest, no game has been the same for us this year. What worked (last Saturday) might not work this week.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s how it has gone for us so far.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Lions can count themselves unlucky not to be better placed than 4-2.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/05\/DSC_0702_59787.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"489\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Erin Riley was named best on court in Redan&#8217;s round six victory.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>They finished within four goals of ladder leaders Sunbury in their Good Friday clash and only lost their round three encounter against Bacchus Marsh by one goal on appeal.<\/p>\n<p>Goal keeper Riley was adjudged best on court by the umpires as part of indigenous round.<\/p>\n<p>Her and Smith will again have key roles to play on Saturday against the Devils, who like North Ballarat, boast a prolific scoring unit.<\/p>\n<p>Darley (4-1-1) will enter round seven in second spot, courtesy of a win over Sebastopol and Lake Wendouree\u2019s 19-goal loss to Sunbury.<\/p>\n<p>North Ballarat coach Annie McCartin said the Roosters would be eager to atone this Saturday against the Lakers, who will also be on the rebound.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe started off well, but Redan applied a lot of pressure through the midcourt,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought we were working through that, but then they were able to shut down our drive.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/05\/DSC_0979_79859.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"480\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Poppy Douglass looks to spark North Ballarat during the third quarter of last Saturday&#8217;s clash at City Oval.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCredit to them, they moved the ball nicely. It was just one of those days at the office for us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll regroup and get back on track, but it will be a challenge.
