{"id":114013,"date":"2025-07-14T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-07-13T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/?p=114013"},"modified":"2025-07-10T09:33:08","modified_gmt":"2025-07-09T23:33:08","slug":"stem-workshops-inspire-next-generation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/news\/stem-workshops-inspire-next-generation\/","title":{"rendered":"STEM workshops inspire next generation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>YOUNG people interested in learning about virtual reality, 3D game design, design and architectural modelling, and using digital systems to solve problems are invited to attend free workshops in Ballarat.<\/p>\n<p>The initiative by The Brainary is running at Ballarat and Sebastopol Libraries until November and its aim is to reach under-represented groups such as girls, First Nations youth and those with neurodiversity.<\/p>\n<p>The workshops provide young people with hands-on opportunities to develop their science, technology, engineering and mathematics skills, and to become the next generation of problem solvers.<\/p>\n<p>Year 9 student Jacinta took part in a virtual reality and 3D game design session on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;My parents know I like STEM, and they decided to sign me up to see what it was all about,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve been coding our own virtual reality world\u2026 I&#8217;ve seen when other people have made it but I&#8217;ve never actually done it myself before.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The workshops received $100,000 funding from the federal government earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The grant itself went towards purchasing all of the technology that will remain with Ballarat library,&#8221; Brainary office manager Emma Hardaker said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Also to training the librarians\u2026 They then will have the skills and knowledge about the technology and the program and what we&#8217;re looking to achieve so they can look to continue the program or a variation of it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Ms Hardaker said that as digital technology became used more widely, it was critical children had the skills to use it.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Everything is really turning digital so it&#8217;s becoming more and more important for kids to learn these skills.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s often an area that&#8217;s seen as being very difficult or hard or for more brainy students but we like to break it down for students, give them these hands-on learning experiences.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>To book a free workshop for children aged 12 to 18, head to <a href=\"https:\/\/thebrainary.com\/?srsltid=AfmBOoqiaSicxNmDjgw4e3_-sSbP4WtNA2_H5mw5N9_V7HAxalr59P0k\">The Brainary<\/a> website.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>YOUNG people interested in learning about virtual reality, 3D game design, design and architectural modelling, and using digital systems to solve problems are invited to attend free workshops in Ballarat.
