{"id":115472,"date":"2025-08-29T13:30:00","date_gmt":"2025-08-29T03:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/?p=115472"},"modified":"2025-08-29T13:41:01","modified_gmt":"2025-08-29T03:41:01","slug":"albanese-allan-greeted-by-angry-protests-at-ballarat-bush-summit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/news\/albanese-allan-greeted-by-angry-protests-at-ballarat-bush-summit\/","title":{"rendered":"Albanese, Allan greeted by angry protests at Ballarat Bush Summit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>EMOTIONS ran high at this morning\u2019s <em>Herald Sun<\/em> Bush Summit at the Ballarat Civic Hall, as state and federal leaders were greeted by protesters outside the venue and rowdy hecklers inside.<\/p>\n<p>Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, the summit\u2019s keynote speaker, suffered regular interruptions during a conversation with <em>Herald Sun<\/em> editor Sam Weir after his speech, but the loudest and most vociferous interjections came during Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan\u2019s post-speech chat with the paper\u2019s chief of staff Tom Minear.<\/p>\n<p>About a dozen people in the audience stood and turned their backs on Ms Allan as she took the stage, and one woman wearing a shirt with \u2018Vic Farmers\u2019 on it stood on her seat and held up a noose around her neck before being told to sit down by security staff.<\/p>\n<p>Police, who maintained a heavy presence outside the venue, lined both sides of the hall for Ms Allan\u2019s appearance.<\/p>\n<p>And it was outside that the Premier met the strongest resistance as protesters blocked her vehicle from leaving the event, forcing Ms Allan to go back inside.<\/p>\n<p>Outside, CFA volunteers protesting the new Emergency Services Volunteer Fund, farmers demonstrating against renewable energy transmission towers, climate activists and others crowded Mair and Doveton streets.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 745px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/08\/20250829_100846_35423.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"745\" height=\"559\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Chat: Mr Albanese makes a point during his post-speech conversation with Herald Sun editor Sam Weir. Photo: DARREN McLEAN<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>CFA trucks and tractors did repeated slow laps around the block to drive their point home; Nationals Senator Bridget McKenzie actually arrived on a tractor and was seen holding a sign that said \u2018Stop Labor\u2019s Towers\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>The summit was the fifth of six events in this year\u2019s National Bush Summit series. The national tour started in Broome, Western Australia, on 20 August and travelled to Mount Gambier (SA), Toowoomba (QLD) and Wagga Wagga (NSW) before landing here.<\/p>\n<p>The final summit is scheduled for Darwin on Monday 1 September.<\/p>\n<p>By the time it ends, the series will have travelled almost 11,900 kilometres across six states and territories, brought together more than 2000 regional people, and featured five state Premiers and five state Opposition leaders.<\/p>\n<p>Senators and MPs and more than 20 CEOs of major companies also will have participated.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Albanese used his speech to announce that an extra $1 billion in low-interest loans will be made available for farmers trying to cope with drought and floods through the Regional Investment Corporation loan scheme.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 679px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/08\/20250829_095741_39175.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"679\" height=\"509\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Listening: A section of the crowd during this morning&#8217;s speeches.
