{"id":116083,"date":"2025-09-26T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-09-25T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/?p=116083"},"modified":"2025-09-24T18:57:18","modified_gmt":"2025-09-24T08:57:18","slug":"hind-snares-elusive-premiership-medal-and-adds-another","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/sport\/hind-snares-elusive-premiership-medal-and-adds-another\/","title":{"rendered":"Hind snares elusive premiership medal and adds another"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>WHEN the end of Nick Hind\u2019s time in the AFL came last August, it came abruptly.<\/p>\n<p>While shattered, it did eventually fill him with a sense of purpose &#8211; to rediscover his love of the game.<\/p>\n<p>Having signed with BFNL club Darley in pre-season, it did not take long for the passion to reignite.<\/p>\n<p>On Saturday, it reached its crescendo when he became a premiership player for the first time in his life.<\/p>\n<p>Hind was one of the chief architects in Darley\u2019s 34-point win over Sunbury at City Oval, earning the AFL Victoria Country Medal as best on ground, as voted by the umpires.<\/p>\n<p>It seemed that at every key moment, the 31-year-old was in the thick of it.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/09\/DSC_0543_58562.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Nick Hind adds his his experience to the defensive huddle at quarter time.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>His two goals off half back were poetry in motion; his countless possessions sweetly executed and predominantly precise.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s how the former Bombers defender had hoped things would pan out, but as he was not afraid to later admit, albeit not without some doubts in the lead-up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve never won a granny and never played in a senior granny, so I was shitting myself this week to be honest,\u201d Hind said post-match.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was the longest week of my life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut to come out and perform \u2026 we had a little plan where I was going to go to half back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it might have thrown them out a bit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt caught them by surprise and I was able to get on the end of a few.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/09\/DSC_0626_59583.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"832\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Nick Hind&#8217;s steady presence all over the field was a crucial element in Darley&#8217;s stirring grand final win over Sunbury.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Hind hailed the decision to join his good mate Dan Jordan, a major influence on him in his Essendon days, as one of the \u2018smartest\u2019 in his life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe decision gets taken out of your hands when it\u2019s time to leave the AFL, but what a place to turn up at and enjoy your footy and get the love back,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just turned up here and knew so many boys here before I got here.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is one of the best days of my life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Coming into grand final day as the beneficiary of a week-off following their second semi-final win over Sunbury, the Devils hit the ground running.<\/p>\n<p>A seven-goal to nil opening quarter laid the foundations for a stirring triumph, as the game evolved into a defensive struggle from quarter-time onwards.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/09\/DSC_0323_66988.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"428\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Nick Hind turns defence into attack during the opening quarter of Saturday&#8217;s grand final.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>While the Lions fought hard in the final three quarters, their 6.9 (45) contribution for the day fell two points shy of the Devils\u2019 opening term tally.<\/p>\n<p>Hind declared it a \u2018pretty complete\u2019 performance by the Devils.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was nice having the week off to be honest. We\u2019ve got a few old bodies, but we\u2019ve been putting it together all year, really,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTeams have challenged us at times, but when the whips were cracking, we knew how good a brand of footy we can play.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe (first) three times we\u2019ve played this year, Sunbury has got the jump on us, so we wanted to come out and set this up early.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought we did that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe set the game up early, but I thought that was a pretty complete game from us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe way we stood up and ground them down, it was pretty professional.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe shut down the stoppages and grinded the win out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m very proud of the boys.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/09\/DSC_0319_67812.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"447\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Nick Hind streams downfield during Saturday&#8217;s grand final.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Devils\u2019 second flag in three years capped a near perfect season.<\/p>\n<p>Only once did Darley taste defeat in 2025, in round one against Melton, by 12 points.<\/p>\n<p>With two medals draped around his neck \u2013 premiership and best on ground \u2013 Hind\u2019s decision to join the Devils in pursuit of an elusive premiership was granted final vindication.<\/p>\n<p>After a year in which they were tested more often and fiercely than reflected in their 20 straight wins to end it, Hind backed the club to be resolute in its premiership defence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe challenge is always there; this is a great league of footy,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBrett (Bewley), our senior boys and coach \u2013 there have been a lot of guys at the senior level, especially at AFL level.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know we can\u2019t be complacent; you have to keep getting better every week.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the challenge isn\u2019t in the wins and losses, the challenge has got to be in the week.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf in periods of games we are not playing good footy, there\u2019s the challenge and the chance to learn from it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love this club \u2013 I absolutely love it.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>WHEN the end of Nick Hind\u2019s time in the AFL came last August, it came abruptly.
