THE Ballarat Seniors Festival is underway with a month-long program of free and low-cost events for older residents.<\/p>\n

The festival runs throughout October and is designed to inspire older residents and provide opportunities for social connection.<\/p>\n

Last week, community members gathered at Brown Hill Hall to try some rock and roll dancing.<\/p>\n

The lesson was led by Ballarat Rockers president John Morris who said dancing is a great way to meet knew people and gently exercise.<\/p>\n

“Part of the purpose was to try and introduce new people to the activity and promote our dance classes on a Friday night as well,” Mr Morris said.<\/p>\n

“It keeps the brain active, it keeps the body active.”<\/p>\n

The Ballarat seniors Community Expo<\/a> will occur at the Ballarat Showgrounds and Events Centre from 10am to 2pm on Wednesday 22 October while #TheBiscuitTin, an initiative about respecting older women, will be launched on Tuesday 14 October at the Eureka Centre.<\/p>\n

On Wednesday 15 October an intergenerational event combining children’s week and the seniors festival will take place at Invermay Hall.<\/p>\n

Mayor Cr Tracey Hargreaves said it is important to celebrate the contributions of older residents.<\/p>\n

“The Ballarat Seniors Festival is all about bringing people together, celebrating our seniors and ensuring they remain connected, active and valued within our community,” she said.<\/p>\n

“It’s also a wonderful opportunity for people of all ages to come along, enjoy the events and learn from one another.”<\/p>\n
