{"id":116774,"date":"2025-10-24T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-10-23T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/?p=116774"},"modified":"2025-10-22T19:51:30","modified_gmt":"2025-10-22T08:51:30","slug":"payne-prince-and-the-cup-delight","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/news\/payne-prince-and-the-cup-delight\/","title":{"rendered":"Payne, Prince, and The Cup delight"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE Melbourne Cup and some of racing&#8217;s legends were in Ballarat last Thursday en route to Flemington for the race that stops the nation on Tuesday 4 November.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 601px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/10\/MelbCuphospC_60290.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"601\" height=\"398\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ballarat radiographer Liam Cogan meets 2016 Melbourne Cup winner Almandin with Adele Ioannou of Living Legends.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The golden trophy was in town as part of the annual Lexus Melbourne Cup Tour which started in New York in June and has travelled Australia.<\/p>\n<p>The local visit featured champion Ballarat jockey Michelle Payne, the famed racehorse she rode to 2015 Melbourne Cup victory, Prince of Penzance, and 2016 Melbourne Cup winner, Almandin.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 602px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/10\/MelbCuphospJ_61142.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"602\" height=\"399\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ballarat Base Hospital staff member Rosie Currie and three-year-old Claire meet 2016 Melbourne Cup winner Almandin.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>They were accompanied by an entourage of Victoria Racing Club (VRC) officials and horse managers from Living Legends which accommodates retired racehorses.<\/p>\n<p>Their first stop was Ballarat Base Hospital where some staff, patients and visitors caught a glimpse of The Cup, met the racing legends, and got to hold The Cup in person.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/10\/MelbCuphospG_63482.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"906\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Meeting Michelle Payne and getting to hold The Cup made the day of Ballarat Base Hospital patient Cathy Moore of Bacchus Marsh.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is the actual trophy that is awarded to the owner (of the Melbourne Cup winner) on the day,&#8221; VRC head of community Daniel Clohesy said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It weights 4.5 kilograms and its current value is $850,000.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Payne recounted the thrill of the history-making 2015 victory with Prince, and empathised with those forced to spend time in hospital having recovered from serious racing injuries.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;People are doing it tough here so to be able to be here taking The Cup around is really special for me,&#8221;
