A SIGN to mark the newly named Cincotta Lane has been unveiled, celebrating the legacy of fruit and vegetable merchants Joe and John Cincotta.<\/p>\n
The previously unnamed lane, which is located between 209 and 211 Mair Street, is used by surrounding businesses for deliveries.<\/p>\n
It was unofficially known as Cincotta Lane before the unveiling due to the mural of the former Cincotta Fruit and Vegetable Merchants’ store.<\/p>\n
The Cincotta family has been part of the Ballarat business community since the gold rush and cousins Erman Cincotta and Laurie Castellani were there to mark the unveiling.<\/p>\n
“The new Cincotta Lane sign honours Joe and John Cincotta, whose unwavering commitment to the Ballarat community spanned more than 60 years,” mayor Cr Tracey Hargreaves said.<\/p>\n
“Their legacy is not just in the produce they sold, but in the lives they touched and the spirit of service they embodied.<\/p>\n
“They were known for their generosity in giving back to the community and creating a family friendly atmosphere in the store that is still memorable for people to this day.”<\/p>\n
The family’s original fruit shop opened at 211 Mair Street in the 1920s by Erman Cincotta.<\/p>\n
Brothers Joe and John Cincotta ran a store at 209 Mair Street from the late 1940s until the early 2000s.<\/p>\n
The naming proposal was initiated by the Palace Regent Cinema and following community consultation, it was submitted to the Geographic Names Victoria before publication in the Victoria Government Gazette.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
