“About 30 to 40 percent of Miners Rest residents have young families, and many people travel to and from the town.<\/p>\n
“When flooding has occurred, it’s impacted people’s ability to pick up kids, get to and from work and generally caused a lot of stress for our residents.<\/p>\n
“These works, in particular the new levies and changes to the ford will be really appreciated.”<\/p>\n
The City of Ballarat has been working on flood modelling in line with the latest climate change projections and has developed concept designs for the works.<\/p>\n
The designs will aim to target flood prone areas and minimise the impact on local residents and the environment.<\/p>\n
“Across Australia we are seeing more extreme weather events as result of climate change and Ballarat is no different,” Ms King said.<\/p>\n
“We know that Miners Rest in particular experiences ongoing flood issues and modelling of Burrumbeet Creek has found many properties are at risk and in need of flood protection.”<\/p>\n
Cr Hargreaves said the flood mitigation works should have long-term benefits for the community.<\/p>\n
“The designs will soon be finalised before going to tender for construction, and once complete the work will see a greater reduction in flood risk along the Burrumbeet Creek,” Cr Hargreaves said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
