{"id":117922,"date":"2025-12-10T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-12-09T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/?p=117922"},"modified":"2025-12-03T22:27:42","modified_gmt":"2025-12-03T11:27:42","slug":"food-is-free-retail-space-for-barkly-square","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/news\/food-is-free-retail-space-for-barkly-square\/","title":{"rendered":"Food is Free retail space for Barkly Square"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>NOT-for-profit Food is Free has launched a retail space at Barkly Square, offering a multi-functional place for the community.<\/p>\n<p>The shop offers workshops, visitors can purchase merchandise, plants and sustainable products, and the space will be available for hire.<\/p>\n<p>Amy Tsilemanis will be the artist in residence.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We wanted to create a space that actually reflects Barkly Square which is multifunctional, collaborative and a space where everyone feels they belong,&#8221; founder Lou Ridsdale said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s going to serve many purposes.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Food is Free aims to provide community members with food security, education, and inclusion.<\/p>\n<p>Their current four locations across Ballarat include the original green space, the grow and thrive garden, the First Nations women&#8217;s yarning garden, and the Sebastopol Library outdoor deck garden.<\/p>\n<p>The retail space will financially support the First Nations women&#8217;s yarning garden, grow and thrive multicultural garden, food security programs, and the long-term goal of an urban food farm.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/12\/Lou3_06912.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">New venture: Food is Free founder Lou Ridsdale at the organisation\u2019s retail space in Barkly Square. It&#8217;s the next step forward to our $2.2 million urban food farm,&#8221; Ms Ridsdale said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have got some really interested parties helping us out pro bono and we&#8217;re forming a subcommittee with a whole bunch of experts.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s going to serve people who are food insecure, it&#8217;s going to be a place where people can come and purchase food boxes from us which we also will give away a portion for free, just so people can get around eating healthy, nutritious food, and it will be a very big sustainability school.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Paint for the retail project was provided through the Dulux Community Donation Program.<\/p>\n<p>The space will be open three to four times a week, including on Saturday morning and at the Barkly Square Christmas market on Friday 12 December.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>NOT-for-profit Food is Free has launched a retail space at Barkly Square, offering a multi-functional place for the community.
