{"id":118663,"date":"2026-01-16T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-01-15T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/?p=118663"},"modified":"2026-01-14T16:45:01","modified_gmt":"2026-01-14T05:45:01","slug":"local-women-win-silver-region-sides-title","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/sport\/local-women-win-silver-region-sides-title\/","title":{"rendered":"Local women win silver Region Sides title"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BALLARAT Highlands bowls region&#8217;s women&#8217;s team won all its matches last weekend to take out the state title in the Silver Tier section of the 2026 annual Region Sides Championships played at Ballarat.<\/p>\n<p>Playing at Midlands Golf Bowling Club on Saturday, the team performed strongly and won all its games against Gippsland, Mornington Peninsula and finally Geelong.<\/p>\n<p>That result put it through to Sunday&#8217;s final at Sebastopol Bowling Club, in which it defeated Northern Gateway 83 shots to 48 \u2013 with all rinks up \u2013 to take out the state title.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/01\/IMG_2353_40402.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Ballarat Highlands Women&#8217;s Bowls team that won through at the weekend to take out the State Region Sides title for the Silver Tier.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The rink of Elizabeth Kierce, Sarah Howard, Sarah Braybrook and skippered by Midlands&#8217; Leah McArthur performed strongly throughout the tournament, winning all their games with significant margins, contributing to the overall team result.<\/p>\n<p>The rink went on to be awarded the highest scoring rink in both the men&#8217;s and women&#8217;s competition for the tournament.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We were a very united side and this helped us perform strongly throughout the competition,&#8221; McArthur said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/01\/IMG_2185_43203.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sarah Braybrook bowling for the Ballarat Highlands team.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;David Berry did a great job coaching us and with Ian Guymer&#8217;s encouragement also in managing the team we remained focused and positive throughout the tournament.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Ballarat Highlands board chairman Lloyd Sims said the team performed magnificently.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our ladies finished off with a comprehensive win in the final with a convincing result against formidable opponents from the Northern Gateway team from Melbourne,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/01\/IMG_2197_43207.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Skipper Leah McArthur champions her side to victory on the weekend taking out the State title.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Being the winners, they will now go through to be promoted to play for the state title in next year&#8217;s Gold Tier of the championships.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The men&#8217;s team, which played its games at BMS on the Saturday, did not share the same success.<\/p>\n<p>It lost all three matches played against Ovens Murray, Gippsland and finally Wimmera regions and was unable to progress to play in the final on Sunday.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>BALLARAT Highlands bowls region&#8217;s women&#8217;s team won all its matches last weekend to take out the state title in the Silver Tier section of the 2026 annual Region Sides Championships played at Ballarat.
