Photo: EVIE LAMB<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a fascinating play and there&#8217;s a lot of aspects to it that are very resonant today, as well as the fact that it&#8217;s just a great spectacle,&#8221; the production&#8217;s director Susan Pilbeam said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve also got a fabulous team working on the design of the costumes, and they&#8217;re both bird nuts.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Birds is a comedy by ancient Greek playwright Aristophanes, often described as the &#8220;father of comedy&#8221;, and was first performed in Athens in 414BC.<\/p>\n<p>The play follows Pisthetaerus, an Athenian who convinces the birds to create a great city in the sky to regain their status as the original gods.<\/p>\n<p>Through satire, song and dance, Aristophanes offers audiences a playful birds&#8217; eye view of the world in this family-friendly theatrical spectacle.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/01\/TheBirdsbardinbuniny_17197.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"397\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bird&#8217;s eye view: Some of the cast members who are preparing for The Bard in Buninyong&#8217;s production of Aristophane&#8217;s &#8216;The Birds&#8217; at the Buninyong Botanic Gardens.
