{"id":119735,"date":"2026-02-20T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-02-19T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/?p=119735"},"modified":"2026-02-18T20:15:45","modified_gmt":"2026-02-18T09:15:45","slug":"tree-to-help-address-mental-health-stigmas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/news\/tree-to-help-address-mental-health-stigmas\/","title":{"rendered":"Tree to help address mental health stigmas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>CRESWICK farmers and residents have united to create a striking reminder about the importance of mental health.<\/p>\n<p>Members of the community \u2013 some of whom knowing first-hand the effects of emotional and psychological concerns in regional and rural areas \u2013 gathered to unveil a blue tree outside IGA Creswick on Thursday 12 February.<\/p>\n<p>Part of the national Blue Tree Project, the installation serves as a visual prompt to address the stigma surrounding suicide, and the benefits of supporting neighbours during tough times.<\/p>\n<p>A joint initiative of Creswick Neighbourhood Centre, IGA Creswick and Creswick Readiness Group, money was raised last year for the cause.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_119739\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-119739\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-119739\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/02\/12FebBlueTreeChrissy_18755-1-rotated.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/02\/12FebBlueTreeChrissy_18755-1-rotated.jpg 900w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/02\/12FebBlueTreeChrissy_18755-1-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/02\/12FebBlueTreeChrissy_18755-1-768x1024.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-119739\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Creswick Neighbourhood Centre manager Chrissy Austin and Steve Sellars from IGA Creswick, where the Blue Tree has been installed.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>IGA Creswick owner Steve Sellars said the tree encouraged people to connect.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We put it there because a blue tree represents a symbol of hope,&#8221; he said. &#8220;It also encourages people to talk.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Farmer Andy Maher spoke at the unveiling.<\/p>\n<p>He said farmers faced a number of burdens that took a toll.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Cost of living pressures and every day the electricity bills,&#8221; he said. &#8220;There&#8217;s been fires recently in the area where houses have been burnt, and that is devastating to lose your house and your farm.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He said the tree would create discussion about mental health.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;To ring people up and say g&#8217;day and let them know you&#8217;re thinking of them is a really big thing to do.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Cattle farmer Amanda Gray added: &#8220;A lot of farmers I think work in very isolated conditions, and as Steve and Andy have said there are a lot of stresses on farmers at the moment.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>She said the tree would be &#8220;a talking point&#8221;.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_119741\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-119741\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-119741\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/02\/12FebBlueTreeStevean_18749-1-rotated.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"822\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-119741\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Steve Sellars and Andy Maher speak to those gathered at the unveiling of the Blue Tree installation.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is a reminder to people who are suffering from mental health issues that you&#8217;re not alone,&#8221; she said. &#8220;That this community supports you, is thinking about you and is here to help you.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Chrissy Austin from the Creswick Neighbourhood Centre said that suicide was &#8220;highly represented&#8221; in regional, rural and remote communities.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;So we want people to feel confident that they can ask for help,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>The centre has placed information at the IGA for anyone requiring mental health support.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the Creswick Readiness Group is continuing to train residents in mental health first aid. Twenty have been trained in the past two years.
