{"id":119755,"date":"2026-02-20T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-02-19T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/?p=119755"},"modified":"2026-02-18T20:28:04","modified_gmt":"2026-02-18T09:28:04","slug":"sir-peter-honoured-to-mark-ballarats-100-year-legacy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/news\/sir-peter-honoured-to-mark-ballarats-100-year-legacy\/","title":{"rendered":"Sir Peter honoured to mark Ballarat&#8217;s 100-year Legacy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A FORMER governor-general and Australian army general visited Ballarat this week to acknowledge 100 years of service from the city&#8217;s Legacy club.<\/p>\n<p>Sir Peter Cosgrove visited the Garden of the Grieving Mother at Sturt Street, Alfredton on Tuesday 17 February as part of the Legacy Club of Ballarat&#8217;s milestone.<\/p>\n<p>The club, the third oldest in Australia, has supported generations of veterans&#8217; families.<\/p>\n<p>Sir Peter spoke to a large crowd about Legacy&#8217;s work, met with school students and Legacy members, and laid a wreath before the Grieving Mother statue.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/02\/021726Sirpeterwreath_43130.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"540\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Former governor-general Sir Peter Cosgrove laid a wreath at the Garden of the Grieving Mother on Sturt Street Photo: CHRISTOPHER O&#8217;LEARY.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He said he was honoured to attend.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;100 years of continuous service is magnificent,&#8221; Sir Peter said.<\/p>\n<p>He said that Ballarat, in the beginning of its Legacy club after the First World War, was home to a generation that knew support for veterans&#8217; families was important.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They came to see that while the ghastly war was over, the long agony of loss, and loss of hope in the families of the fallen needed to be addressed,&#8221; Sir Peter said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;And that had to be metaphorically, with an arm around the shoulder, and practically with the sort of things that the breadwinner would want his or her family to have.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/02\/021726SirPeterAlasta_43070.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Legacy Club of Ballarat vice-president Alastair Dowling with Sir Peter Cosgrove.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He said it was natural for the city&#8217;s Legatees to volunteer.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Well Ballarat was always a wonderful rural city,&#8221; Sir Peter said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s almost an oxymoron to say rural, because Ballarat was a huge place, and a wonderful economic driver of our minerals economy in Australia.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But out of all of this you would say well, naturally the men and women of this district said, &#8216;our AIF families are going to be looked after, and we&#8217;ll step forward&#8217;.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Today Ballarat Legacy maintains a membership of at least 90 Legatees and assists almost 500 widows and dependents.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/02\/021726PetaHamishandS_43128.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Legatee Peta Gillespie and former governor-general Sir Peter Cosgrove with young Hamish Hamilton.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It covers an area that borders Meredith, Bacchus Marsh, St Arnaud and Daylesford.<\/p>\n<p>Club vice-president Alastair Dowling said the centenary was a magnificent achievement.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re very proud of having reached that significant milestone, and we&#8217;ll be here 100 years from now too,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A FORMER governor-general and Australian army general visited Ballarat this week to acknowledge 100 years of service from the city&#8217;s Legacy club.
