ON A quiet morning on Tuesday 24 February, a truck packed with a full household of furniture characterised the work of the city’s Rotarians in the past year.<\/p>\n

As part of Community Care Centre Ballarat’s mission, the truck was bound for people in need.<\/p>\n

The centre’s chair Gary Morgan said that in the just over 12 months that the service became fully operational, more than 130 consignments of goods had been provided to people experiencing a range of hardship.<\/p>\n

“So we have couches and beds and we do linen and fridges and freezers and microwaves and tap kettles and toasters and all that sort of stuff,” he said of the centre.<\/p>\n

“Most people go in there their minds are blown away.”<\/p>\n

The truck this week even included some paintings, Mr Morgan said, so those receiving the items could “make the house look like their home”.<\/p>\n

Ballarat’s six Rotary clubs established the non-for-profit service.<\/p>\n

Set up much like the Western Emergency Relief Network in Melbourne, the centre has secondhand and some new items that are sold to welfare organisations at reduced rates, with the added benefit of these goods avoiding landfill.<\/p>\n

Items not suitable for the centre are sent to op-shops in Ballarat and Maryborough.<\/p>\n

Mr Morgan said the idea came from when the clubs realised Ballarat had a need for furniture provision to welfare organisations helping those in emergency care.<\/p>\n

“It’s sort of grown bigger than what I thought,” he said.<\/p>\n

“We feel that if we can do our little bit, then what we’re going to do is help break the cycle in the community and help turn people’s lives around.<\/p>\n

“If you can break that cycle of poverty and lead to better education, employment and inclusion at the same time, as improving our environment, well there’s win-wins around for everybody.”<\/p>\n

Mr Morgan said one of the centre’s main focuses was supporting those who had experienced domestic violence. They provide packs of goods for those people reestablishing themselves elsewhere.<\/p>\n

“A typical kitchen pack is a toaster and a kettle, you know six or four plates and bowls and spoons and knives and forks and this cloth and detergent and all that so they can set up a bit of normality immediately.”<\/p>\n

Donated goods have been and are being sent to countries such as Vanuatu and Timor Leste.<\/p>\n

“The generosity of people in our community for a need is amazing,” Mr Morgan said.<\/p>\n
