STAR guard Abbey Wehrung will remain a Ballarat Miner in 2026, recommitting for a fourth consecutive NBL 1 South season.<\/p>\n

The 30-year-old heads back to her junior club for the winter following another exceptional WNBL season with Bendigo Spirit in which she was honoured as the team’s defensive player of the year.<\/p>\n

Despite an injury interrupted start to the season, Wehrung averaged 7.4 points, 2.6 rebounds and two assists, while consistently taking on some of the league’s toughest guard assignments.<\/p>\n

Much desired qualities by the Spirit, her trademark composure and leadership will be equally valued by the Miners, under new coach Brendan Joyce.<\/p>\n

Wehrung again showcased her exceptional skills for the Miners last season, averaging 17.82 points, 5,82 rebounds, and 1.4 assists per game through 11 appearances.<\/p>\n

Renowned for her offensive firepower, Wehrung’s defensive prowess is equally vital to her success.<\/p>\n

Her defensive player of the year award for the Spirit was the latest in a line of recent accolades.<\/p>\n

In 2024, she was awarded the Miners’ defensive player of the year award and the NBL1 South defensive player of the year league award.<\/p>\n

She followed up by claiming the sixth player of the year title in the Spirit’s 2024-25 championship-winning campaign.<\/p>\n

After a 13th place finish in 2025, underpinned by a 7-15 win-loss record, the Miners women’s list continues to take shape.<\/p>\n

Confirmed signings include Wehrung, her Spirit teammate Casey Samuels, Geelong Venom guard Elissa Brett, Laura Taylor and Millie Cracknell.<\/p>\n
