THE 2026 cohort of Dancing With Our Stars competitors have started rehearsing ballroom and latin routines as part of the major annual Ballarat Foundation fundraising initiative.<\/p>\n

Ten community members representing local businesses and organisations are aiming to raise at least $20,000 each ahead of a gala performance night on Saturday 20 June.<\/p>\n

They are all learning to dance with an experienced partner at The Dance Studio, with instruction and choreography by Shelley Ross. One of the couples will win a mirrorball trophy.<\/p>\n

This year’s stars are ceramic artist and founder of The Pottage Shelby Sherritt, ear, nose and throat surgeon Nadine de Alwis, Turret Caf\u00e9 and Turret Bakehouse’s LeRoy Hand, Buxton Ballarat agent Jesse Manton, physio at Newington Physio Paige Brooks, Playground Gym owner Dustyn Rodgers, disability advocate and accessibility champion Heidi Biggin, Oasis Building Group designer Paige Gercovich, Ballarat Greyhound Racing Club manager Jodie Faralla, and The Munster Arms Hotel manager Kirk Baine.<\/p>\n

Biggin is dancing the dramatic Paso Doble to give back to the foundation which sponsored her participation in the Committee for Ballarat’s Future Shapers program last year.<\/p>\n

“I did my deb, and that’s all the dancing I’ve ever done,” she said. “That was 23 years ago. But I’ve got three young kids… so I dance to The Wiggles.<\/p>\n

“Adrian Misseri is my dance partner, and he was my mentor in Future Shapers.<\/p>\n

“I don’t have a shy bone in my body so I’m not nervous or shy about the dancing, I’ll do anything if it means helping.”<\/p>\n

Biggin is legally blind and said her way of learning choreography will be different to her competition.<\/p>\n

“I have no reference,” she said. “I can’t watch people dancing and copy them, I can’t even watch the TV programs because they don’t commentate… There’s just music without reference to what they’re doing on the stage.<\/p>\n

“I am nervous about that, so I’ll have to get close to my partner. But it is very tactile, and I’ll learn in a different way.<\/p>\n

“I’m hoping to share along the way how I do it through videos.”<\/p>\n

A popular online content creator on TikTok and Instagram, potter Sherritt is no stranger to the limelight, but performing the waltz is new.<\/p>\n

“Stepping onto the dance floor is definitely outside my comfort zone, but that’s part of the challenge,” she said.<\/p>\n

“I’m used to spinning on the pottery wheel, so now it’s time to see how I go spinning on the dance floor, all for a great cause.<\/p>\n

“This community has supported my journey, and I’m proud to be raising funds and awareness for programs that help locals doing it tough.”<\/p>\n

Faralla – dancing the tango – said she is community-focused in her leadership role at Ballarat Greyhounds and is keen to extend that through DWOS.<\/p>\n

“It’s an opportunity to raise considerable money for an amazing Ballarat charity,” she said.<\/p>\n

“I’ve been fortunate enough to have major sponsors…and now I’m getting down to the support of racing participants, family and friends. We have some ideas to incorporate the dogs into our fundraising, including events like doggy yoga.”<\/p>\n

Ross has guided 70 DWOS dancers since the competition began seven years ago.<\/p>\n

“I’ve fine-tuned the teaching process of how to go from zero to 100 with beginner dancers,” she said.<\/p>\n

“So they look visually dynamic for the audience, we pick presentation points and some of the technique involved that we need to make that dance work, and which helps them move better.<\/p>\n

“But what they find the hardest is giving their personality in the dance, and it’s the personality that sells it.<\/p>\n

“Putting on a floor show is daunting…but once they get out there and they’ve done it, they love it.”<\/p>\n

Funds raised through DWOS will go towards the Ballarat Foundation’s hyper-local work in key focus areas including homelessness, food insecurity, gender inequality and violence, youth success and mental health.<\/p>\n

“Dancing with our Stars has raised more than $1 million over its history. In the current economic environment, it’s even more important to support our stars to help us deliver to people in need,” said Ballarat Foundation CEO Andrew Eales.<\/p>\n
