A GROUP of cyclists has ridden hundreds of kilometres and raised tens of thousands of dollars for cancer research.<\/p>\n

The Jimmy’s Licorice Allsorts travelled 520km from Echuca to Port Fairy on Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 March as part of the annual Murray to Moyne Cycle Relay.<\/p>\n

Their fundraising tally to support research at the Fiona Elsey Cancer Research Institute was $42,855 earlier this week.<\/p>\n

“We are very grateful for the generosity, shown by so many,” team co-founder Jim Waight said.<\/p>\n

He said it had been a brilliant weekend.<\/p>\n

“At 9am on Saturday we left Echuca, riding all the way to Hamilton arriving at about 12.40am on Sunday morning,” he said.<\/p>\n

“We all kept safe and sound. Some of the boys even enjoyed a swim at the beach after arriving at Port Fairy \u2013 a very nice way to finish a ride.”<\/p>\n

The cyclists rode through suitable weather, while there had been diesel in every town the support bus had been driven through.<\/p>\n

“In the end it all went to plan,” Mr Waight said.<\/p>\n

He said the experience was a way to build comradery and teamwork.<\/p>\n

“Some of our riders also have some deeply personal reasons for riding in this event,” he said. “Doing it together is a positive way that we can bring hope to those who are or have experienced cancer.<\/p>\n

“It is a tangible thing we can do that will contribute to better treatments and outcomes for cancer patients. In the end, research is the key.”<\/p>\n

The team is still taking donations towards its $50,000 target.<\/p>\n

“Our events are designed to bring hope, and an enjoyable experience – not only fundraisers, but activities that bring people together to make a difference,” Mr Waight said.<\/p>\n
