A major overnight police operation in Ballarat has resulted in 12 arrests, as authorities intensify efforts to curb rising car thefts across the region.<\/p>\n
Local officers joined forces with specialist units including the Air Wing and Dog Squad as part of Operation Talon, targeting high risk driving and stolen vehicles over two nights.<\/p>\n
The operation unfolded dramatically on Wednesday night when police spotted an allegedly stolen Subaru Impreza travelling at speed in Ballarat East about 11.15pm. The Air Wing tracked the vehicle from above, guiding ground crews to deploy stop sticks in Mount Pleasant.<\/p>\n
Two occupants allegedly fled on foot before being arrested with help from the Dog Squad.<\/p>\n
An 18-year-old Canadian man was charged with dangerous driving while being pursued by police, theft of a motor vehicle and licensing offences. He was bailed to reappear in court on 18 May.<\/p>\n
A woman, who has no fixed address, was also charged with theft of a motor vehicle, possessing a drug of dependence and possessing an imitation firearm. She was bailed to appear at court.<\/p>\n
In a separate incident about 2am in Wendouree, police attempted to intercept another vehicle which allegedly fled. The Air Wing again tracked the car, leading officers to a nearby property where a 27-year-old man was arrested. He was charged and remanded to appear in court on 7 April.<\/p>\n
Police seized four stolen vehicles during the operation and issued five traffic infringement notices.<\/p>\n
Ballarat Divisional Response Unit Detective Senior Sergeant Elissa Smith said the coordinated effort sent a strong message to offenders.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhile the community slept, we had scores of police patrolling the Ballarat area from both the ground and the sky.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThere was no place for crooks to hide with more than 12 arrests in two nights.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cCar thefts remain a significant concern for police and we will continue to run these targeted operations to remove reckless cars from the roads.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cOur message to offenders is clear. You cannot outrun the Air Wing.\u201d<\/p>\n
