{"id":121425,"date":"2026-04-18T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-04-17T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/?p=121425"},"modified":"2026-04-21T20:26:11","modified_gmt":"2026-04-21T10:26:11","slug":"telehelp-to-real-health","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/news\/telehelp-to-real-health\/","title":{"rendered":"Telehelp to real health"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>EVAN Amador is one cute product from a trial of virtual medical care that is being expanded across Victoria.<\/p>\n<p>The Creswick baby, who was born in February, received treatment as part of the state government&#8217;s virtual hospital pilot.<\/p>\n<p>During her pregnancy, Evan&#8217;s mother Shelley had been referred to the Royal Women&#8217;s Hospital because of low birth weight for his gestational age.<\/p>\n<p>Shelley, who was working up until her due date, said the treatment meant considerable travel.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We were travelling back and forward between Creswick and Melbourne, which was pretty much a full day of work, really,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;By the time you got to Melbourne, got your parking and sort of waited to see the doctor, it was pretty full-on.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>At one point Shelley and her husband considered the need for delivery in Melbourne if they were required to have scans.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/04\/260409-daleshelleyev_27616.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"900\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Grampians Health chief executive officer Dale Fraser, Shelley Amador and Evan, Member for Ripon Martha Haylett, Grampians Health clinical director women&#8217;s and children&#8217;s services Dr Natasha Frawley and chief operating officer Ben Kelly.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>However, she was referred to the government trial, meaning she could attend Grampians Health and receive her treatment through telehealth.<\/p>\n<p>She said that they had received excellent care in Ballarat, and that the switch to the pilot had been a game changer.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It just meant coming to the maternity outpatients here in Ballarat and having the specialists do a live scan, so it was absolutely brilliant,&#8221; Shelley said.<\/p>\n<p>Evan, she said, was very well.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He&#8217;s almost doubled his weight since he was born, so we&#8217;re absolutely thrilled,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>The pilot had delivered specialist foetal medicine services at Ballarat since December last year.<\/p>\n<p>Dale Fraser, chief executive officer of Grampians Health, said they were delighted to be part of the trial.<\/p>\n<p>He said the program, which used conventional video technology, helped support pregnancies with high-end needs.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What we have is the ability to have real-time scanning done here being read and interpreted and seen in Melbourne,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_121431\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-121431\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-121431\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/04\/260409-ShelleyandEva_27696-1-rotated.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"1200\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-121431\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">New mum Shelley Amador with baby Evan. Both received treatment through the state government\u2019s virtual hospital pilot.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A mum might be having an ultrasound, for example.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The clinician in Melbourne can then direct the placement of the probe or the movement of the mother to ensure that they can get a view that they&#8217;re particularly interested in.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>More than 260 Victorians had been treated as part of the trial, which also included virtual wards focused on heart failure and post-cardiac surgery patients. The trial will expand in coming weeks for the treatment of more than 400 patients.<\/p>\n<p>Member for Ripon Martha Haylett said the pilot&#8217;s growth to other regional centres such as Shepparton showed it was working.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We know that people are waiting a long time for specialist appointments, especially in rural and regional areas,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We want to stop that.
