Trouble hit 30 minutes before race two when Gay was advised his brake lights weren’t working, with the issue unable to be fixed before the start.<\/p>\n
“This was very disappointing as we could have been advised sooner and it took the 86 out of outright contention for the weekend,” he said.<\/p>\n
He was quick to find redemption on Sunday in race three.<\/p>\n
Starting at the rear of the grid and ‘on a mission’, Gay passed eight cars into turn one and was leading the race by the end of lap two, producing a stunning 1.06 lap time, more than a second quicker than the field, allowing him to cruise to a six-second win.<\/p>\n
Race four proved much simpler, with Gay leading from pole on the rolling start, before pulling out to a 10-second lead enroute to an all-the-way win to cap a prosperous weekend at Calder Park, where he has previously enjoyed plenty of success.<\/p>\n
“The highlight of the weekend was definitely the last to first (in race three) like November last year,” Gay said.<\/p>\n
“It was very exciting coming through the field for the win with speeds in excess of 240km\/h; certainly not possible without the help of Mark Dawe, from Dawsey Performance, who fixed the brake light issue and my lovely wife Kim, pit crew all weekend, with great support to keep racing.<\/p>\n
“Also, it was great to see quite a few Ballarat Light Car Club and Ballarat people at the track watching the action.”<\/p>\n
Gay said racing at state level was very time consuming and costly, and he could not do it without the support of his sponsors and supporters, including Tyrone Smith, from Electronic Solutions, Justin Doherty and Pete Jowett from Doherty and Clark, Pete Corcoran from Auto Projects, Craig Riddiford from Craig Signs, Sam and Dale Butterfield from Truline Steering and Suspension, Andrew and Marcus McCathie from Traction Tyres, and Mark Dawe from Dawsey Performance.<\/p>\n
Gay will return to action in his 86 in the open sports sedans at Philip Island.<\/p>\n
But before that, the plan is to get his Subaru WRX rally out after a few changes to tackle some dirt events.<\/p>\n
