ABBEY Wehrung says she is excited to continue her journey with Bendigo Spirit after re-signing with the WNBL club for the 2026-27 season.<\/p>\n
A member of the Spirit’s 2024-25 championship team, the 30-year-old sharpshooter is coming off another impressive campaign.<\/p>\n
She averaged 7.4 points, 2.6 rebounds and 2 assists per game, consistently taking on some of the league’s toughest guard assignments while providing trademark composure and leadership at both ends of the floor.<\/p>\n
Enjoying another standout NBL1 season with Ballarat Miners, the decision to re-sign with the Spirit was an easy-one for Wehrung.<\/p>\n
“I love the Spirit program and being part of this group,” Wehrung said.<\/p>\n
“This club means a lot to me, and I’m proud of the role I play here.<\/p>\n
“I’m looking forward to building on what we started this season and pushing ourselves again in WNBL27.”<\/p>\n
In her second stint with the Spirit, the Daylesford-born guard has continued to go from strength-to-strength in her WNBL career.<\/p>\n
After being a part of the Spirit’s drought-breaking 2024-25 championship, Wehrung went on to play a key leadership role across last season’s campaign, stepping into the position of vice captain and becoming a valued member of the club’s leadership group.<\/p>\n
Highly regarded for her consistency and defensive discipline, Wehrung was recognised as the Spirit’s defensive player of the year.<\/p>\n
Spirit general manager Dan Jackson declared Wehrung’s re-signing as ‘another important piece of the club’s roster puzzle’ as they looked towards next season.<\/p>\n
“Abbey’s value to our program goes far beyond what people see on game day,” he said.<\/p>\n
“She brought tremendous leadership to our group this season, took on the vice-captain role with real maturity, and set standards defensively every time she stepped on the court.<\/p>\n
“Her experience, professionalism and competitiveness proved invaluable within a young and evolving playing group.<\/p>\n
“Having her experience around a young core is incredibly important for us as we continue to build and chase success.”<\/p>\n
Wehrung is currently averaging above 16 points, 6 assists and 6 rebounds for the Miners through eight games.<\/p>\n
She joins Izzy Borlase, Olivia Pollerd, Kelsey Rees, Georgia Booth and Casey Samuels as players contracted to the Spirit for the WNBL27 season.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
