A Group of local singers is about to increase the sum total of harmony in the world as part of Ballarat’s Heritage Festival.<\/p>\n
Members of The Ballarat Singers are inviting anyone who loves to sing or listen to hymns to come together and be part of Echoes of Faith: A community Hymn Celebration this Saturday 23 May.<\/p>\n
The live music event happens from 2pm at the Christ Church Cathedral on Lydiard Street South, with no singing experience needed to attend or participate.<\/p>\n
Musical director of The Ballarat Singers Kevin Harper said that at a time when the world can feel uncertain, singing in a group offers a rare and simple sense of belonging.<\/p>\n
“We’re very grateful to the Dean of the Cathedral, the Very Reverend Michael Davies, for the opportunity to gather in this beautiful place of worship,” Harper said.<\/p>\n
“We warmly welcome people of all denominations, or none at all, to come together, find comfort, and reconnect with hymns and music known and loved over many years.<\/p>\n
“The Ballarat Singers are a small group who come together for the joy of singing and to share that love with others.”<\/p>\n
Well known hymns like Amazing Grace and Abide with Me will feature, with accompaniment by cathedral organist Leigh Askew.<\/p>\n
Last year, especially for the Heritage Festival, Harper wrote a hymn entitled Peace We Are Singing, which reflected on world-wide conflict. This year he has followed up by composing another called Peace Begins Where Hearts Are Open.<\/p>\n
Reverend Davies said he is delighted that the cathedral will be open during the Heritage Festival for locals and visitors to enjoy the music.<\/p>\n
“We are very grateful that The Ballarat Singers have chosen to donate the entry fee, a gold coin donation, or more, to the Cathedral Music Program, supporting musical liturgy and scholarships,” he said.<\/p>\n
