PATRICK Dangerfield has spoken about his desire to play beyond this season.<\/p>\n
Having made his debut in 2008 with the Adelaide Crows, the Geelong captain has been one of the competition\u2019s superstars throughout his 19 seasons, amassing eight All-Australians, a Brownlow Medal in 2016 and winning the premiership in 2022.<\/p>\n
At the age of 36 and without a contract for 2027, there has been plenty of speculation as to what the 370-game player will do beyond this season.<\/p>\n
Fresh off the back of the Cats\u2019 45-point win against the Suns on Friday night, Dangerfield has expressed a desire to play on next season, which would put him within reach of 400 games.<\/p>\n
But admits that conversation will come at the end of the season and wants to ensure that he isn\u2019t holding the team back from performing at its best.<\/p>\n
\u201cI’d like to,\u201d Dangerfield told SEN\u2019s Crunch Time.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut I want to be able to impact and play the way that I have for the majority of my career.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe club has been great in that capacity, and we’re sort of on the same page around that.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo, that really won’t be something that’ll happen in the next six weeks. It’s sort of (towards the) back end of the year, we’ll see where things are at.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt’s got to be the right thing for the Geelong Footy Club.<\/p>\n
\u201cI’m under no illusions that the progression of the club is a critical part of where we go, and you can’t have people that are holding that back.”<\/p>\n
Tom Morris then asked Dangerfield if his body could still hold up for another season and if he had the motivation to continue.<\/p>\n
This would have him double down on his desire to play, believing his motivation has grown stronger.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe second one is fine, to be honest,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe motivation, I reckon, I loved the game more in recent times.<\/p>\n
\u201cEven the bad games, you know? Whether that’s because you get to the back end of your career and you realise just how special it is to be involved in footy.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut I think if the body holds up, I can impact games, then I’m keen to see what it looks like.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut that’s still some while away. I think anyone that’s been in footy, and you’re sitting next to a couple of greats in the call box, and there’s nothing quite like it.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo, without being too selfish, I’m keen to keep going, but it’s got to be the right thing for all parties, and that won’t be something sort of decided soon, really.\u201d<\/p>\n
Geelong travelled west to Optus Stadium on Thursday night to face the ladder-leading Dockers.<\/p>\n
Dangerfield is currently averaging 14.9 disposals, two clearances and 1.2 goals per game from his 10 appearances.<\/p>\n
