AUSCYCLING National Cyclo-cross Championships organisers are expecting another stacked field when the event returns to Ballarat next month.<\/p>\n

Entries have officially opened for the championships to be held at Victoria Park in Newington on 14\u201316 August.<\/p>\n

The event will see riders compete for national titles and the coveted green and gold jersey<\/p>\n

Bringing together riders of all ages and abilities, they will tackle a predominantly new course for 2026, featuring about 2.5km of racing across 90 per cent grass and 10 per cent dirt terrain.<\/p>\n

Championship categories include elite, under-23, expert, masters 1 to 8, junior, under-17, under-15 and under-13.<\/p>\n

The weekend also includes the seventh and final round of the AusCycling National Cyclo-cross Series.<\/p>\n

Rounds 3 and 4 of the series were run in Canberra late last month, with rounds 5 and 6 to be contested in Ipswich this weekend.<\/p>\n

Excitement is high, according to AusCycling head of events \u2013 mountain bike and cyclo-cross Lukas Matys, as entries start to pour in.<\/p>\n

“Off the back of a highly successful 2025 delivery, anticipation is building for another stacked field in what is shaping up to be a headline event on the national calendar,” he said.<\/p>\n

“All eyes are on reigning elite women’s national champion Peta Mullens, with fans hoping she returns to defend her crown.<\/p>\n

“Landing exactly two weeks before the 2026 UCI MTB World Championships, the event serves as a crucial, high-stakes training ground for rising stars Alana Fletcher and Oliver Grande, who were recently selected for the Australian junior XCO squad heading to Italy.<\/p>\n

“Without a doubt, Ballarat is set to host the absolute finest cycling talent in the country.”<\/p>\n

For the uninitiated, cyclo-cross is an off-road form of bike racing around a short circuit that requires competitors to overcome barriers and obstacles on the course.<\/p>\n

Often riders will be required to dismount and carry their bike to overcome the obstacles.<\/p>\n

Matys said the national series had already delivered plenty of exceptional racing, with some clear title contenders beginning to emerge.<\/p>\n

“In the elite men’s field, the in-form Hayden Vermani is undoubtedly one to watch,” he said.<\/p>\n

“Meanwhile, Alana Fletcher, Zoe Davidson, and Catherine Hosking have all impressed during the women’s opening rounds and look set to battle for victory when racing gets underway in Ballarat.”<\/p>\n

A commanding elite women’s win for Mullens last year was her first in six years.<\/p>\n

It marked the Bendigo rider’s 14th national championship across multiple disciplines, including mountain-biking, cyclo-cross, road and track.<\/p>\n

She followed up by winning her 15th a week later at the Cross Country Marathon (XCM) National Championships in Melrose, South Australia.<\/p>\n

Not on many event promoters’ wish list, rain and mud will be welcome sights at Victoria Park come the second week of August.<\/p>\n

“It might not be the worst weather, but it is certainly classic cyclo-cross terrain,” Matys said.<\/p>\n

“A combination of steady drizzle, crisp temperatures and a layer of mud always heightens the spectacle.<\/p>\n

“These demanding conditions truly bring the sport to life, ensuring thrilling action for riders and spectators alike.<\/p>\n

“If Ballarat serves up a biting winter day, we will gladly embrace it.”<\/p>\n

The 2026 event will close an important chapter in the championships’ history.<\/p>\n

It will be the last of four in a row \u2013 for now \u2013 in Ballarat.<\/p>\n

After previously hosting cyclo-cross national series events, Ballarat was first awarded staging rights for three years in 2023, before an extension.<\/p>\n

“Ballarat has earned its crown as a powerhouse of Australian cyclo-cross,” Matys said.<\/p>\n

“The venue brings a fierce course, exceptional racing, and an electric atmosphere that makes it a must-attend stop for riders and officials.<\/p>\n

“But it’s not just about the racing. Ballarat’s legendary hospitality, tight-knit community, and pure passion for cycling are exactly why the crowds keep coming back every single year.”<\/p>\n

Matys is hoping for a huge send-off.<\/p>\n

“This is our final year to show Australia how Ballarat hosts a championship before the event moves to a new home next season,” he said.<\/p>\n

“We are calling on the entire Ballarat community to come out, line the barriers, and give these national championships the legendary send-off they deserve.<\/p>\n

“Hosting this prestigious event has been an incredible privilege for the region, and we need your local energy to make this grand finale unforgettable.”<\/p>\n

This year’s event promises to be bigger and bolder than ever, and with a few new on and off-course additions.<\/p>\n

“This year, we are turning up the energy with an expanded race village loaded with great food and drinks all day long,” Matys said.<\/p>\n

“It is a fantastic day out for families, cycling purists, and anyone looking for a fresh weekend adventure.<\/p>\n

“From seasoned fans to total beginners, there is non-stop action to enjoy.”<\/p>\n
