ONE-HUNDRED years ago on 11 November 1918, four years of brutal conflict came to an end.<\/p>\n
62,000 Australians died fighting for our freedom and in service of our nation. At 11:00 am on the 11th day of the 11thmonth
\n1918 the guns fell silent for the first time in four years. The Armistice had begun.<\/p>\n
Armistice Day changed to Remembrance Day after World War Two and now incorporates the formal remembrance of all wars and conflicts since.<\/p>\n
I have often pondered on what the feelings of those who were involved in Armistice Day 1918 were. Happy, sad, angry, guilty, relieved, numb, I can only imagine all of those feelings were present in each and every survivor.<\/p>\n
I can say with surety that my paternal grandfather, 193 Corporal Herbert William Baker MM and MID was elated and happy that he had survived. He and his mates wanted to celebrate.<\/p>\n
The sadness would come later; these feelings came to a head on the way back to Australia. Quite a number of his mates and friends who started their journey with him were no longer coming home.<\/p>\n
Over the years of their lives those that survived remembered them in a way mates do.<\/p>\n
That tradition was handed down from generation to generation and we carry it on still today. I do believe that this coming Armistice Day should also be a celebration of who we are.<\/p>\n
