{"id":20396,"date":"2019-03-27T21:02:17","date_gmt":"2019-03-27T10:02:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/?p=20396"},"modified":"2019-03-28T10:35:39","modified_gmt":"2019-03-27T23:35:39","slug":"booth-lee-30-years-young-for-ray-white","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/real-estate\/booth-lee-30-years-young-for-ray-white\/","title":{"rendered":"Booth &amp; Lee &#8211; 30 years young for Ray White"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>ON Saturday, 1 April 1989, Trevor Booth and Phillip Lee took a step into the unknown.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>They walked away from their roles with other real estate agencies and went into partnership together, establishing Booth &amp; Lee.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe both were really keen to do things a bit differently and saw the opportunity in the marketplace,\u201d said Mr Lee.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe we\u2019re probably full of excitement and enthusiasm and didn\u2019t think too much about it, to be honest, and it\u2019s bloody hard work starting a business from scratch.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think you needed to be young because if we knew then what we know now we may not have gone through with it,\u201d Mr Booth added with a laugh.<\/p>\n<p>There was a sense the pair would be successful from day one.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were overwhelmed when we opened on the first of April 1989,\u201d Mr Lee said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe phones just started ringing like we\u2019d been in business for the last 10 years. People didn\u2019t say, \u2018awwww, you\u2019re a new business,\u2019 the phones just rang, and people enquired on properties like we\u2019d been around for years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The business was a diverse one, the Booth &amp; Lee moniker was \u2018Estate Agents, Auctioneers, Valuers.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>It wasn\u2019t easy in those early years.<\/p>\n<p>Apart from the challenges of starting a new business and seeking to establish themselves in a highly competitive marketplace, there was something big around the corner.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSix months after, the \u2018Recession we had to Have\u2019 came along,\u201d Mr Lee said. \u201cThat hit us pretty hard and we had to work very hard through that. Overdraft interest rates hit 20.5 per cent. So those early years were tough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Yet Booth &amp; Lee weathered the storm of high interest rates and declining property values and went onto become one of the region\u2019s leading rest estate agencies.<\/p>\n<p>Along the way they have played a hand is some of Ballarat\u2019s biggest projects.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Booth conducted the valuations on land that became the Western Highway\u2019s route around the city and the firm sold large sites including the Humffray Street State School and Glenfine Homestead.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGlenfine Homestead was big in our early years,\u201d Mr Lee said. \u201cTrevor had to pick up the late Sir Joh Bjelke-Petersen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had to drive him down to the homestead, down Lismore way,\u201d added Mr Booth.<\/p>\n<p>The firm also launched the first display village in Ballarat, brining together three different builders. The site was known as Bonshaw Park.<\/p>\n<p>In August 2011, Booth &amp; Lee joined the Ray White Group.<\/p>\n<p>The change to Ray White Ballarat was a good fit right from the start.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s allowed our business to move up to the next level,\u201d Mr Lee said. \u201cIt\u2019s enabled us to grow, provide more services and have more back up in relation to training and marketing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe joined a family business, because Ray White are a family business into their fourth generation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There are 23 staff currently working at Ray White Ballarat, with the vast majority under 30 years of age.<\/p>\n<p>Both Mr Booth and Mr Lee agreed that a young, vibrant office environment pushes them to seek new ways of doing things and be constantly adapting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have a young, energetic team,\u201d Mr Lee said. \u201cThey drive you, because they challenge us and they want to do new things. There\u2019s no doubt the young ones keep us going.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ray White Ballarat will celebrate 30 years of business, including their time as Booth &amp; Lee, at an event on Monday, 1 April.<\/p>\n<p><em>Next week we\u2019ll look at how the agency has reacted to, adapted, and embraced technological change in the real estate sector over 30 years.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ON Saturday, 1 April 1989, Trevor Booth and Phillip Lee took a step into the unknown.
