DAVID Bowie\u2019s song Rebel Rebel has been covered by Bruce Springsteen, Rickie Lee Jones and even the Bay City Rollers.<\/p>\n
Ballarat is about to hear it like never before when the Melbourne Gay and Lesbian Chorus brings its show REBEL REBEL to the Mining Exchange later this month.<\/p>\n
The performance will feature the hits of David Bowie as well as Annie Lennox in what Musical Director Drew Downing describes as the Choir putting its own spin on well-loved classics.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe works of Bowie and Lennox are a great vehicle for MGLC, offering musical legacies which continue to inspire and empower,\u201d Mr Downing said.<\/p>\n
The choir sees the songs of Bowie and Lennox as rule breaking, earth shaking music made by two rock outlaws unashamedly different.<\/p>\n
\u201cFor a lot of people, they made it okay to step outside of the norm, to bend gender stereotypes, to be different,\u201d said Stephanie Teh, the choir\u2019s Assistant Musical Director.<\/p>\n
The choir has been using music to champion diversity for three decades.<\/p>\n
MGLC President Rob Grimmer said it is significant that the show is accessible to members of the LGBTIQ+ community living outside the city.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s so important to us that we reach out to the LGBTIQ+ community right across Victoria,\u201d he said. \u201cHaving said that we welcome all comers to our shows.\u201d<\/p>\n
REBEL REBEL is at Ballarat Mining Exchange, 8 Lydiard Street North, Ballarat on Saturday, 22 June at 5pm.<\/p>\n
