STARTING a Business Later in Life \u2013 Mature Entrepreneurs Event<\/em> is set for Friday at the Ballarat Tech School.<\/p>\n

The government-funded forum will feature keynote speaker Professor Alex Maritz from the La Trobe Business School and other experts on entrepreneurship and business-running later in life.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe want to inspire and encourage [people over 45 years old]. If you get the right advice and help, there\u2019s no reason why you shouldn\u2019t give it a go,\u201d said Dr Paul Miller, from Sarina Russo Entrepreneurs.<\/p>\n

\u201cSenior entrepreneurs are generally more successful than their younger counterparts. They\u2019ve got a lot of life experience, the networks, usually a bit of money behind them, and the skills.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dr Miller has been told by a retiree that \u201cthere are only so many coffees you can drink, and only so many games of golf you can play.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a lifestyle option, you spend all your life working, and now it\u2019s time to reset the balance between life and work. It can be good fun,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

However, there are \u201cobstacles like self-belief, fear and financial risk\u201d that can be discouraging, he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe wanted to take a holistic approach to it because it\u2019s not just about starting a business, this is about the person and where they are in life.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey can get excited about the future.\u201d<\/p>\n
