{"id":64203,"date":"2019-10-10T06:00:13","date_gmt":"2019-10-09T20:00:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/?p=64203"},"modified":"2019-10-09T13:55:32","modified_gmt":"2019-10-09T03:55:32","slug":"sporty-senior-receives-top-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/news\/sporty-senior-receives-top-award\/","title":{"rendered":"Sporty senior receives top award"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>WALKING, playing basketball, netball, squash, ten pin bowling and dancing&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>There have been many strings to the racket of Margaret Potter\u2019s life, and she added another this week.<\/p>\n<p>During the launch of City of Ballarat\u2019s Seniors Festival, Ms Potter has been named Senior of the Year, also winning the Healthy and Active Living Award.<\/p>\n<p>As President of the Happy Wanderers walking group for over 60s, Ms Potter provides opportunities for retirees to be social and active.<\/p>\n<p>Until the age of 65, she was a passionate basketballer, and in 1969 founded the Married Women\u2019s Basketball Association.<\/p>\n<p>She is a life member of the Ballarat Basketball Association, a qualified referee, has served on committees and supported the Lady Miners and youth teams behind the scenes.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_64213\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-64213\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-64213\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2019\/10\/DSC_0055-for-web-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2019\/10\/DSC_0055-for-web-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2019\/10\/DSC_0055-for-web-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2019\/10\/DSC_0055-for-web-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2019\/10\/DSC_0055-for-web-272x182.jpg 272w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-64213\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cr Belinda Coates, Dawn Fischer and City of Ballarat Mayor, Cr Samantha McIntosh.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Ms Potter was Ballarat\u2019s first female bus driver, has been the President of the Parents Without Partners Dance Club for 46 years, volunteered with Meals on Wheels for more than 20 years, and at the Base Hospital kiosk for seven.<\/p>\n<p>Leading a busy, active life, Ms Potter was overwhelmed to receive her awards on Thursday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you think of all the things that you\u2019ve done, at the time it was always a pleasure, but you wonder how you fit it all in,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s a great honour to be chosen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs far as basketball is concerned, it\u2019s the same as any sport, one you love it you\u2019re just there all the time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She said becoming Ballarat\u2019s first woman bus driver was an achievement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomebody recognised that I would have been the most well-known woman in Ballarat, between so many schools. I just loved that,\u201d Ms Potter said.<\/p>\n<p>Dawn Fischer was the recipient of the Volunteering Award, having been President, Secretary, bulletin editor, and barbecue and catering chair at the Sebastopol and District Lions Club across 27 years.<\/p>\n<p>She is Secretary to the Lions Club Cabinet, Secretary to the District Governor, was a big part of launching the new Alfredton Lions Club, is a Guides leader and is Treasurer of Sebastopol Senior Citizens.<\/p>\n<p>Former SBS Radio Dutch Executive Producer and current Voice FM Ethnic Coordinator, Yvon Davis won the Diversity Award.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Davis runs Intercultural Ambassadors\u2019, and Voice\u2019s social media accounts, presents Dutch news weekly, was a City of Ballarat multicultural ambassador, is currently an intercultural advisor for council and is a Harmony Fest organiser.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_64214\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-64214\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-64214 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2019\/10\/DSC_0067-for-web-e1570593311465-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2019\/10\/DSC_0067-for-web-e1570593311465-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2019\/10\/DSC_0067-for-web-e1570593311465-768x1152.jpg 768w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2019\/10\/DSC_0067-for-web-e1570593311465-682x1024.jpg 682w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2019\/10\/DSC_0067-for-web-e1570593311465.jpg 1632w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-64214\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cr Coates, Yvon Davis and Cr McIntosh.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>As the author of <em>Jann Vennik: the Dutchman at Eureka<\/em>, her second book <em>Mining, Mud and Medals<\/em> is in production. She is an Intercultural Information Place volunteer at the Ballarat Library.<\/p>\n<p>Cr Belinda Coates said Ballarat is fortunate to have so many \u201camazing\u201d seniors contributing to the community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSocial connections and community connections between people are one of the biggest predictors of wellbeing for people as they age, so to see them all contributing in such amazing ways is really heart-warming,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSatisfaction continues to go up as we age.
