{"id":64770,"date":"2019-10-31T06:00:56","date_gmt":"2019-10-30T19:00:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/?p=64770"},"modified":"2019-10-30T11:38:28","modified_gmt":"2019-10-30T00:38:28","slug":"somers-time-to-shine-at-carols","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/news\/somers-time-to-shine-at-carols\/","title":{"rendered":"Somers time to shine at Carols"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>HE\u2019S been part of many of our lives for nearly fifty years and now TV legend Daryl Somers will connect with us again as host of this year\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/news\/community-carols-to-continue-at-christmas\/\">Ballarat Carols by Candlelight<\/a> presented by <a href=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/real-estate\/community-behind-carols-support\/\">Harcourts<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The three-time Gold Logie winner and front man for shows like <em>Hey, Hey it\u2019s Saturday<\/em> and <em>Dancing with the Stars<\/em> said he was excited about many different elements of the event, including working with some of the city\u2019s most talented people.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a number of Ballarat performers who\u2019ve gone onto to do <a href=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/news\/stars-of-musical-theatre-to-sing-at-carols\/\">musical theater<\/a> and the like, all really top pros now and so it\u2019s great they are going to be available to come back and celebrate,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just think we can make it as entertaining as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-64771\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2019\/10\/Somers-01-for-web-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2019\/10\/Somers-01-for-web-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2019\/10\/Somers-01-for-web-768x1152.jpg 768w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2019\/10\/Somers-01-for-web-682x1024.jpg 682w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2019\/10\/Somers-01-for-web.jpg 1632w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/>Of course, Somers is no stranger to Carols by Candlelight events, having hosted and sung at the Melbourne show at the Myer Music Bowl for years.<\/p>\n<p>Yet one of the key reasons for keeping the tradition alive in Ballarat is at the heart of Somers\u2019 participation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c4500 families rely on the <a href=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/news\/caligari-ambassador-for-carols\/\">3BA Christmas Appeal<\/a>,\u201d he said. \u201cBut it\u2019s not just that, the general community deserves support, and the Carols bring everyone together. There\u2019s no more important time of year than Christmas for families and communities. Especially if those families are doing it tough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Somers won\u2019t just be hosting the Carols, he\u2019ll also perform and is chipping in with production help.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m looking forward to throwing myself into it and making it as entertaining as we possibly can, with maybe a few surprises thrown in,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll certainly keep the prestige and the reverence of the occasion as people love to sing their carols and hymns and all that stuff.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI like to keep it light where you can and keep it fun.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With a 45-year history of coming to Ballarat for TV specials <em>Hey, Hey it\u2019s the Holidays<\/em> and shows and events with BTV-6 like <em>Star Quest<\/em>, the <em>Showbiz<\/em> series and a telethon, Somers has fond memories of the city.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was asked to come and host a talent program like the one I had come through myself, <em>New Faces<\/em>,\u201d he said. \u201cIt became a regular trip up to Ballarat for a few years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLa Scala Restaurant was a favorite. We would finish the show and go there for supper, it was always wonderful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Somers\u2019 connection to the city was a big part of the reason Ballarat Carols by Candlelight <a href=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/news\/meet-the-voices-behind-ballarats-carols\/\">organising committee head, Matt Hustwaite<\/a> was keen to get the star on board.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe idea came about after seeing some old BTV-6 footage of the 1988 Ballarat Telethon that Daryl hosted,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe really wanted a big-name MC to add credibility to the event, but I honestly didn\u2019t expect to actually get Daryl. Once we pitched him on the background of our group saving the Carols and the community nature of the event, he was very keen to donate his time and collaborate with us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As for what Somers\u2019 involvement means, Mr Hustwaite was excited with the addition of true star power and what that would mean for other elements of the Carols.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHaving someone of Daryl\u2019s calibre really helps take the whole event to the next level,\u201d he said. \u201cThe additions of elements like Daryl, our returning performers like Zoy Frangos and the <a href=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/news\/sparkling-crescendo-set-for-carols\/\">fireworks finale<\/a> means that Carols will make for a spectacular and memorable Christmas for Ballarat.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>HE\u2019S been part of many of our lives for nearly fifty years and now TV legend Daryl Somers will connect with us again as host of this year\u2019s Ballarat Carols by Candlelight presented by Harcourts.
