BALLARAT Carols by Candlelight<\/a> presented by Harcourts<\/a> will be easily accessible to more people, with Auslan interpreters signing on stage.<\/p>\n

Provided by Auslan Stage Left, deaf children, families and those with a hearing impairment will be able to enjoy the festive evening as much as anyone else, as two interpreters rotate throughout the evening.<\/p>\n

Susan Emerson, Director of Auslan Stage Left said access to Auslan at public events raises the language\u2019s profile and sparks curiosity.<\/p>\n

\"\"\u201cA large amount of people that go to see a show like the carols haven\u2019t come across Auslan before,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s their first exposure and you get a lot of questions asked of the interpreters like, \u2018how do you learn Auslan and where can I go?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Ms Emerson said an event is made so much more vibrant with the inclusion of Auslan interpretation.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re working in spoken English and then you have sign language, and that\u2019s a language that\u2019s used in this country too,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cA lot of kids tend to watch the interpreters because it\u2019s so visual, and a lot of kids get a lot of meaning just by watching the interpreters.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s fantastic we\u2019re reaching more communities with the carols.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ballarat Carols by Candlelight President, Matt Hustwaite<\/a> said throughout carols history, the aim has been community connectedness.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo have the support of Auslan Stage Left and the City of Ballarat to make sure those who need interpretive services are accommodated for is invaluable,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
